Brainerd edges Stars in conference opener 3-1

By Michael Jacobson

The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team lost their conference opener at Brainerd on Thursday night 3-1.

The Stars outshot the Warriors 22-18 in their Central Lakes Conference opener and took a 1-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game when ninth grade forward Blythe Sjoberg scored her first goal of the year, assisted by sophomore Traci Thielen and junior Greta Omann on a power play.

Brainerd, though, tied the game with four minutes to play in the first period and took a 2-1 lead in the last minute of the first period.

The two teams skated scorelessly in the second period and for much of the third period, with the Stars seeking a tying goal. With the Stars on a power play, Brainerd finally scored a clinching short-handed goal with just over two minutes to play in the game, making the final score 3-1.

This week, the Stars (0-2) hosted St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday night in Richmond. After Thanksgiving, the Stars will travel to the Duluth East Tournament - with games at Pioneer Hall, which is connected to the Duluth Entertainment and Conference Center - for a four-team tourney.

On Friday, the Stars will play the Duluth Northern Stars at 6 p.m., while Cambridge-Isanti plays Lakeville South at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the third-place game will be held at 12 noon, and the championship game at 2 p.m.
