Girls basketball starts practice

Practice started Monday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 a.m. for the varsity and junior varsity girls basketball players.

Morning practices were held from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. Monday thru Thursday. After school, open gyms were held, where the girls had time to work on both conditioning, playing a full court game, and individual skills, like shooting and rebounding, on the side baskets.

The ninth grade team, coached by Tom Jansen, began practice after school on Nov. 11. Jansen is a student teacher, in the high school, for Mr. Meyer's classes.

Coach Romelle Evans will be coaching junior varsity this year, after coaching ninth grade for the past eight years.

"My goals for the season are to get the girls to work hard, play together, and have fun," she said.

Varsity coach Cameron Mahlum is new to both the Paynesville teaching and coaching staff. He isnít new to the coaching scene. He has ten years experience coaching baseball. He has worked with youth at basketball clinics, but this will be his first year coaching basketball at a varsity level.

"I stress work ethic, intelligence, and fun. This philosophy, if demonstrated, should allow us to be competitive with anyone we play" he said.

Mahlum said his goals for the season include "finishing in the upper half of the conference, as well as building a foundation for the future."

The varsity team does not possess a lot of size. According to Mahlum, "Quickness and a relentless defense will combat the lack of size. Teams that play us will discover they must work hard to compete. The style of ball we play will give us an advantage over the teams that really are passive."

"We will be exciting to watch. The school and community will be pleased with the effort the girls display," he added.

The varsity team will be competing in a Thanksgiving Jamboree at Eden Valley-Watkins on Friday night and Saturday morning. Teams included in the tournament are: Eden Valley-Watkins, St. Cloud Cathedral, Sauk Centre, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, Dassel-Cokato and Paynesville.
