Stars open season with losses to Tech, Brainerd

By Crystal Songetay

The River Lakes Stars girlsÕ hockey team started their winter season last week, losing their first two games of the season: 9-0 to St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Richmond, and 2-1 to Brainerd on Thursday, Nov. 14.

The River Lakes Stars are a cooperative team comprised of players from five high schools: Albany, New London-Spicer, Paynesville, Rocori, and St. JohnÕs Prep.

This year the team has 18 girls, including four from Paynesville. Senior Crystal Songetay and junior Trisha Wendlandt are the goalies for the Stars. Sophomore April Osendorf also returns to the team, with ninth grader Jessica Thielen joining the team this year.

New coaches for the team this year are head coach Kirby St. John and assistant coach Stacy Emerson.

The Stars hosted St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 12, for their first game of the season at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond. Unfortunately, the game was a letdown for the Stars, who lost 9-0.

St. Cloud Tech scored three goals in the first period, two in the second, and four in the third. Kelly Pearson had three goals and one assist for Tech, and Katie Cowardin had one goal and three assists.

St. Cloud Tech outshot the Stars 48-11, with Songetay making 39 saves for the Stars.

The Stars played better on Thursday at Brainerd. After a scoreless first period, Amber Schulzetenberg opened the scoring for the Stars with a goal in the second period. But Brainerd tied the score with a goal later in that period and scored the winning goal in the third period to win 2-1.

ÒWe saw great improvement since TuesdayÕs game against Tech. We did a lot of positive things, and weÕve had outstanding goal tending from Trish and Crystal. We are excited to see how the season will unfold,Ó commented St. John.

Wendlandt made 31 saves for the Stars, who were outshot 33-9.

This week, the Stars play at Little Falls on Thursday. They will host Litchfield, at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville, on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m.
