Special Olympic bowlers compete at state

By Jane Hjelle

The 2001 fall Bowling Classic for Special Olympics was held from Friday to Sunday, Nov. 9-11, in South St. Paul. Nine hundred and fifty Minnesota athletes from 70 different teams participated in the three-day state tournament.

Four athletes from Paynesville Area High School were eligible to bowl in the state tournament: Erica Wander, Dan Schutz, Yvette Lounsbury, and Dallas Richardson.

Athletes are divided into divisions based on age and skill level. Each athlete bowled two games as part of the singles competition.

Schutz received a third-place bronze medal, and Richardson, Lounsbury, and Wander received gold medals for first place.

Special Olympics is a volunteer program. For more information, contact Jane Hjelle at the elementary school at 320-243-3725.
