Veteran's hunt to be shown on TV

By Michael Jacobson

Bill Ryan of Paynesville, a Vietnam veteran, will be featured on the National Wild Turkey Federation's national television show "Turkey Call" next week.

The weekly show on The Outdoor Channel features stories about wild turkey hunting from across the country. The episode featuring Ryan's hunt will be shown on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 12:30 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m., and on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m., all on The Outdoor Channel.

For the past two years, the Wheelin' Sportsmen - a branch of the National Wild Turkey Federation - www.nwtf.org - aimed at providing hunting opportunities - has held turkey hunts for disabled veterans at Camp Ripley. Ryan's hunt from last spring, when he bagged a 19-pound tom, was selected for one of the 13 television shows out of dozens of taped hunts.

The episode of "Turkey Call" - to be shown three times next week - will show a hunt for a snow gobbler in Montana and then Ryan's hunt for an Eastern longbeard wild turkey with Wheelin' Sportsmen, which is coordinated in Minnesota by Ron Welle of Spring Hill.
