Volleyball team drops two games

The varsity volleyball team had a long week, with two games during the week and a Saturday tournament.

Last Tuesday, Oct. 1, the team played Sauk Centre, and lost in three games. On Thursday, Oct. 3, the girls lost to Litchfield. On Saturday, Oct. 5, they played in Minnewaskaís eight-team tournament and placed fourth.

On Tuesday, the Bulldogs played at Sauk Centre. They played good volleyball, but it wasnít enough to overcome the Mainstreeters.

The Bulldogs started off weak in the first game, a 15-4 loss, but the second and third games were both tough losses, 15-12 and 15-13.

Stephanie Tangen led the team in hitting with seven kills. Krista Fuchs followed with three kills. Sheri Lieser and Tanya Lieser each had two. Carrie Hemmesch, Jill Spanier, Stephanie Mueller, Laura Mages and Stacy Roberg all played tough defense.

On Thursday night, the Bulldogs started out strong in the first game, winning 15-4. In the second game, the Bulldogs were down 12-2 and came back to tie up the score, but lost a heart breaker, 16-14. The last two games were also very close, but Paynesville lost 17-15 and 15-9.

Tangen and Glenz totaled 10 kills, and Roberg hit 10-11with two kill assists. Serving was very good for the Bulldogs. Sara Spanier served 11-11 with two aces, Sheri Lieser was 7-7 with two aces, Mueller was 14-15, Hemmesch was 8-9 and Nelson served 25-25 with two aces.

Early Saturday morning, the Bulldogs traveled to Minnewaska for a tournament. The Bulldogs started off the day against Hancock, splitting the match, winning the first game 15-8, and losing the second 15-3.

Next they played West Central Area and won both games 15-6 and 15-13. In the third match the girls played Frazee and won both games 15-4 and 15-8. Glenz and Lieser led in blocking with six aces each.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Bulldogs play Long Prairie-Grey Eagle at home. On Thursday the team plays at Melrose. Game time is 7:30 p.m. for both games.
