Dogs take sixth at Sartell

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs volleyball team won one match and placed sixth out of eight teams at a tournament at Sartell on Thursday, closing their regular season.

The Bulldogs beat Chisago Lakes but lost to St. Cloud Cathedral and Foley in pool play at the tourney, and then lost to Morris in a close match for fifth place.

The Dogs dominated Chisago Lakes, getting their ninth win of the season, winning 25-15 and 25-11. Senior Rachael Wendlandt had four kills and three blocks, junior Lynn Lieser had four kills, and junior Shonda Martinson had three kills.

The Dogs also served well, getting 12 aces. Senior Brittany Lieser had six ace serves, junior Ashley Lieser had three aces, and senior Val Callenius had two aces.

"Chisago Lakes is a very young team. Our serving was good, and they had a difficult time returning it. The Bulldogs played together and hustled after the balls that came back across the net," said coach Dawn Knoll.

The Dogs played well against Cathedral, in a third meeting with their conference opponent, losing 25-21 and 25-20.

Martinson had four kills and three blocks to lead the Dogs' net attack, with Wendlandt and Lynn Lieser each adding four kills.

Brittany Cathedral, who went undefeated in winning the WCC North this year, lost in the tournament finals to Red Lake Falls, taking second.

Senior Brittany Lieser had six ace serves in a two-set match against Chisago Lakes in the Dogs' only win at the Sartell tourney last week.

"We played very well in this match against Cathedral," said Knoll. "The intensity was there, and the determination to play was sparked. The serving errors are the thing that hurt us."

The Dogs lost their third pool-play match to Foley: 25-16 and 25-19. Foley took third at the tourney.

"Once again we had parts of our game that were excellent and parts of our game that hurt us. Our serving needs to improve so that we don't give away points during the rally serving," said Knoll.

The Dogs lost a close, three-set match to Morris for fifth place, taking sixth. The Dogs dominated the first set, winning 25-10, but lost a close second set 25-19 and an even closer third set 15-13.

Wendlandt had seven kills, Callenius and Martinson had five, and Brittany Lieser had four to lead the Dogs' attack.

Knoll was pleased with how the team played overall at the tournament. "The tournament was a good warm up for playoffs," she said. "We played with more intensity than we have for the past couple of weeks. We did a lot of things much better. Hopefully we can take the positives from the tournament and add to them."

The Bulldogs (9-13) open the subsection playoffs on Thursday against Albany. The Dogs are seeded sixth in Subsection 17, and Albany is seeded third. That match will start at 7 p.m. at Albany.

If the Dogs win, they will play on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. at Sauk Centre against either #2 Melrose or #7 LPGE.

Sauk Centre 3, Paynesville 0
The Dogs were swept by Sauk Centre in their final conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Sauk finished 5-5 in the WCC North with the win and completed a season sweep of the Dogs. They earned the fourth seed in Subsection 17. The Dogs finished 3-7 in the WCC North and were seeded sixth in Subsection 17.

"This match was a tough loss in the standings for playoffs," Knoll said. "There are a whole group of teams that are bunched together in the middle of the pack. Sauk Centre hit the ball well, and we were getting there on coverage but our attack was not aggressive enough."
