Nehowig defends her subsection title

By Michael Jacobson

Sophomore Kacy Nehowig Sophomore Kacy Nehowig (pictured at right) captured the Subsection 5A East individual title for the second year in a row on Tuesday, Oct. 19, helping the Dogs place fourth and advance as a team to sections.

Nehowig won her first title of the season and fourth of her career. In addition to her two subsection wins, she won the BBE Invite in 2003 and the home Koronis Invite in 2002. The two-time All State runner covered the 4,000-meter course (about two and a half miles) in 15:59, six seconds faster than her winning time in 2003. She won this year's race by 14 seconds.

Ninth grader Kaitlyn Frenchick placed in the top five at subsections for the second year in a row, running fifth again, in 16:48.

"Kacy ran a great race and took command early," said coach Darrel Carstens. "Kaitlyn ran well but will have to lower her time to make state qualifying."

Rockford (46) won the subsection title. Annandale (74) was second, Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball (82) was third, and the Bulldogs (89) were fourth. Carstens and the coaches thought the Dogs could have run as high as second.

Tarin Beireis The top four teams and the top ten individuals qualfied for sections.

Sophomore Tanis Beireis ran 22nd, ninth grader Melanie Koerner ran 29th, and ninth grader Tarin Beireis ran 32nd to complete the Dogs' team score at subsections.

Ninth grader Tarin Beireis (right) finished 32nd for the Dogs at subsections last week while sophomore Sheena Hoekstra (left) was 44th.

Four junior varsity girls ran in the subsection race: ninth grader Allie Wendroth was 13th, eighth grader Shanna Hoekstra was 15th, sophomore Morgen Kern was 18th and junior Lindsey Wyffels was 20th.

Both varsity teams qualified for the Section 5A meet on Thursday, Oct. 28, at Becker. The section meet, held at Pebble Creek Golf Course, starts at 4 p.m.

In addition to the four teams from the west subsection, Becker, St. Cloud Cathedral, Albany, and Onamia qualified from the east subsection and will run at sections.
