Senior Matt Mehr led the Dogs with a top-ten finish, qualifying for sections individually. Mehr was eighth, covering the 5,000-meter course in 18:38.

Sophomores Dugan Flanders and Peder Thompson finished back-to-back at 11th and 12th. Flanders beat Thompson to the finish line by five seconds. Thompson continued to show great improvement in his running this year, finishing 20 spots higher at subsections than last year.

Senior Chris Utsch (23rd) and eighth grader Jamison Wall (25th) finished one second apart to complete the Dogs' team score.

The top four teams and top four individuals advanced to sections.

Coach Darrel Carstens said they expected the boys to finish third with an average race, and they did. Carstens did express satisfaction with a number of good runs by the team, especially from young runners.

Rockford (32) edged Annandale (44) for the subsection title. Paynesville (79) and St. John's Prep (113) also advanced from the east subsection.

Advancing to sections from the west subsection are St. Cloud Cathedral, Pierz, Becker, and Mora.

The junior varsity boys finished second at the subsection meet with eighth grader Nathan Friederichs leading the way in second place. Other junior varsity were senior Todd Thielen in seventh, ninth grader Chris Block in eighth, ninth grader Colin Spooner in 11th, and ninth grader Keegan Meagher in 12th.

The junior high boys won the meet with sixth grader Tanner Wendroth winning the race. Eighth grader Ezra Thompson was second, eighth grader Clayton Johnson fifth, sixth grader Dylan Sheridan sixth, sixth grader Garrett Thompson seventh, sixth grader Devon Koerner 11th, sixth grader Josh Liestman 15th, and sixth grader Zach Friederichs 16th.

Both varsity teams qualified for the Section 5A meet on Thursday, Oct. 28, at Becker. The section meet, held at Pebble Creek Golf Course, starts at 4 p.m. The top two teams and the top ten individuals at sections will qualify for state.
