Flanders, Wendroth earn All Conference honors

By Michael Jacobson

Senior Dugan Flanders and eighth grader Tanner Wendroth earned All Conference honors in the West Central Conference North last week in cross country by finishing in the top 14 in the conference meet at Albany.

Both earned All Conference honors for the first time. Flanders finished 11th in 18:23 to lead the Dogs for the sixth time this season. Wendroth, who according to Press records is the first eighth grade boys' runner to earn All Conference honors in cross country, was 14th, seven seconds behind Flanders and just ahead of the 15th-place runner.

It was the first time since 2003 that the boys have had an All Conference runner in cross country, though Flanders did just miss earning All Conference honors (by one place) as a sophomore in 2004.

"Dugan and Tanner ran great races to be named All Conference," said coach Darrel Carstens. "We ran OK in a very tough conference."

The boys, as a team, finished fifth in the WCC North. St. Cloud Cathedral (46) won the conference title, followed by LPGE (51).

Sophomore Josh Sturtz (23rd), sophomore Ezra Thompson (32nd), and ninth grader Kohl Nehowig (34th) completed the Dogs' team score, with Nehowig just edging senior Peder Thompson (35th).

Eighth grader Trevor Spanier ran his first varsity cross country race at the conference meet.

This week, the Dogs will run in the Section 5A meet at the golf course in Pierz on Thursday, Oct. 26, starting at 4:30 p.m. This year, no subsection meets were held, so the Dogs will run against 18 other schools at the section meet with the top two teams and top ten individuals qualifying for state.
