Melrose rallies to beat netters in five sets

By Mindy Meagher

Mindy Meagher The Bulldogs hosted their final home game on Tuesday, Oct. 15, against the Melrose Dutchmen and lost in five sets.

Before the game, the team honored its three seniors: Laura Stoneburner, Morgan Martinson, and Mindy Meagher.

The Dogs were ready to play volleyball one last time at home during the regular season and came out strong and took complete control over the game with hard hits, great serves, and excellent defense. The Dogs took a 13-1 lead in the first set but lost their momentum and control of the game. Melrose rallied to win the first set, 16-14.

The Bulldogs won the second and third sets, 15-11 and 15-13, taking a 2-1 lead. But needing one more set to claim the match, the Dogs lost the final two sets, 15-6 and 15-12, and lost the match 3-2.

The Bulldogs also lost to Melrose earlier in the season in four sets.

With the regular season over for the Bulldogs, they ended up with a 3-7 conference record and a 7-12 overall record.

The Dogs will start subsection play on Thursday in New London-Spicer against the Wildcats at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs are seeded #5 in the subsection and the Wildcats are #4. The Wildcats defeated the Dogs in four sets in early September.

If the Bulldogs win, they will play either #1 BBE or #8 EV-W on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the subsection semifinals. That match will be in Grove City at ACGC High School at 7 p.m.
