Boys fall flat in WCC North meet at Sauk

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs boys' cross country team placed fifth at the West Central Conference North meet on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Sauk Centre.

Coach Darrel Carstens was disappointed with the boys' varsity finish, last among the five teams. They "did not do as well as expected by finishing fifth in the conference. We thought they were the third best team, but it wasn't a good day for the team," he said.

Some individuals did run well, Carstens added.

Sophomore Dugan Flanders missed earning All Conference honors by one place. The top 14 runners earn All Conference honors, and Flanders finished first for the Dogs and 15th overall.

Senior Matt Mehr, battling an injury now but the Dogs' top runner for most of the season, was next for Paynesville, finishing 20th. Sophomore Peder Thompson was three seconds behind Mehr in 21st.

Ninth grader Brandon Soine, in his first varsity meet, was 23rd, and eighth grader Jamison Wall was 30th to complete the Bulldogs' team score.

St. Cloud Cathedral had five runners in the top ten to win the conference title. Sauk Centre, with three runners in the top five, was second.

Both the Bulldogs' junior varsity and junior high teams finished second at the conference meet behind Cathedral, which always fields a huge team. "Our younger runners did very well, and there will be a bright future with these individuals," said Carstens.

This week, the Dogs ran in the subsection meet at Annandale on Tuesday. Next week, if they qualify, they will run in the Section 5A meet at the Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker on Thursday, Oct. 28.
