Bulldogs lose heartbreaker in 2 OTs

The Paynesville Bulldog football team lost a heartbreaker at home on Friday against the Lac qui Parle Valley Eagles. The final score was 20-12 in favor of the Eagles in double overtime. The Bulldogs came out with very little fire and found out you aren't going to win many games playing with no emotion.

Milan Virant (23) carried the football 12 times for 36 yards against LQPV.

The Bulldogs were completely dominated on both sides of the ball for the entire first half. On offense, the Bulldogs were getting out hustled and outplayed by the Eagles the entire half. Paynesville only came up with 68 total yards of offense for the whole first half. The Dogs' defense forgot that each player must do his assignment and not worry about making a great play every time. The defense was caught out of position numerous times which led to the Eagles pounding out 232 yards of offense against them. The only highlight of the entire first half was an 87-yard kickoff return by Ryan Schneider. The score at halftime was LQPV 12 and Paynesville 6.

The second half saw the Bulldogs pick up the intensity and play better football. The offense found a little spark and was able to improve on their dismal first half performance. The only score for the Dogs in the second half was a one-yard run by Adam Schaefer at the end of the third quarter to tie the game.

The Bulldogs then turned the ball over twice in the fourth quarter, but Paynesville's defense still limited the Eagles to just 72 total yards in the whole second half. The hardest thing to understand is that the Bulldogs made no adjustments on defense at halftime.

The Dogs had a chance to win the game with time running out in the fourth quarter and the score tied at 12. They had the ball on the Eagles's eight-yard line with eight seconds to go in the game, when Logan Louis was sacked attempting to pass to T.J. Schultz in the end zone.ÊTime ran out and the game went into overtime.

In the first overtime, the Bulldogs went on offense and were intercepted on a pass from Chris Fuchs to Nic Glenz who was in the end zone. The Dogs defense rose to the occasion and stopped the Eagles from getting into the end zone, putting the game into a second overtime.

On the first play for the Eagles in the second overtime, they completed a halfback pass for a touchdown and then ran three yards for the two-point conversion to take a 20-12 lead. The Bullodgs then went on offense and could not get the ball into the end zone on their four plays from the ten-yard line. This left the final score at LQPV 20, Paynesville 12.

The Bulldogs now play Long Prairie-Grey Eagle tonight in Paynesville with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The Thunder are currently ranked number three in class 3A.

The Bulldog Booster Club will be having a tailgate picnic starting at 6:30 p.m. before tonight's football game on the football field. The cost is $3 per person.

If the Bulldogs qualify for section playoffs, they will open play on Tuesday, Oct. 24, against an opponent to be determined later, but at the opponent's home site.
