The Paynesville football team hosted Wadena-Deer Creek last Friday night for their last home game This was also parentsí night. The parents were in for a good night, as the Bulldogs put on a good show offensively and defensively.

WDC won the toss before the game and elected to receive the ball. On their first drive, WDC moved the ball quickly to Paynesvilleís 28-yard line before being stopped by the Bulldog defense on downs. The Bulldogs then took over, but could not move the ball, which forced them to punt. This gave WDC another chance.

They again moved the ball but the Bulldogs once again came up with another good defensive stand and stopped WDC at Paynesvilleís 21-yard line.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs started opening it up. They scored on the second play from scrimmage in the second quarter. Brett Aagesen scored on a 37-yard run. The point after was good and the Bulldogs pulled ahead, 8-0. A couple of fumbles and an interception prevented WDC from scoring, but Paynesville scored again when Darren Michaelis ran in for a 5-yard touchdown. The point after was missed but the score was 14-0 going into the second half.

On Paynesvilleís first drive of the second half, the Bulldogs put up another score. This time Jim Mages caught a 24- yard touchdown pass from Noah Bruntlett, putting the Bulldogs up 20-0. Paynesville again missed the point after attempt. WDCís first drive was stopped by the Bulldogs, but on their next drive WDC quickly scored on a 20-yard pass. The score was now 20-6, as they missed the point after.

The Bulldogs scored once more in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run by Aagesen, which brought the score to 26-6, where it would stay for the rest of the game. The defense stopped WDC in the fourth quarter, when Michaelis intercepted the ball twice.

The Bulldogsí next game will be at St Cloud Cathedral on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Game time is 7:30 p.m. This is the Bulldogsí last regular season game.

With this win over WDC, Paynesville is in fifth place in Section 6B. If Paynesville beats Cathedral and Pierz loses to Holdingford, the Bulldogs will be fourth in the section and their first playoff game will be at home. That game will be on the Oct. 22. However, if Pierz does win, the Bulldogs will likely play at Pierz. If the Bulldogs lose to Cathedral, Paynesville will still be in the playoffs but will probably play St. Michael-Albertville again. None of these scenarios are for certain until the results from Wednesdayís games are in, but Paynesville will definitely be in the playoffs.
