Girls run fifth at Becker

By Michael Jacobson

Becker and St. Cloud Cathedral established themselves as favorites in Section 5A, winning a preview meet the Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, where the section meet will be held later this month.

The Paynesville girls' cross country team finished fifth at the meet. The Dogs were third last year in Section 5A, trailing Cathedral and Rockford but beating fourth-place Becker. North Branch and Big Lake were third and fourth at the meet.

Sophomore Kacy Nehowig recorded another top-ten finish, running seventh to lead the Dogs. Her time over the 4,000-meter course - roughly two and a half miles - was 16:23.

Ninth grader Kaitlyn Frenchick just missed a top-ten finish, taking 11th place in 16:39, only 16 seconds behind Nehowig.

Ninth grader Melanie Koerner (26th), eighth grader Kally Felling (34th), and ninth grader Kelsey Miller (42nd) completed the Dogs' team score.

The cross country teams had a pizza outing after the meet, and it looked like to coach Darrel Carstens that they had eaten pizza before the race. 'We did not do well," he said. "Focus is lacking at this time and will need to be taken care of before the conference, subsection etc. We seem to be jogging and running, but not racing and competing."

This week, the Dogs ran in the conference meet on Tuesday at Sauk Centre. Next week, they will start their postseason schedule with the subsection meet at Annandale on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 4:30 p.m.
