Albany edges harriers at Becker meet

By Michael Jacobson

The Albany Huskies edged the Bulldogs boys' cross country team at the Becker/Big Lake Invitational last week. Albany took sixth place at the meet, while the Dogs settled for seventh.

The meet was held at the Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, the site of the Section 5A meet at the end of the month.

Senior Matt Mehr led the Dogs by finishing 11th overall, covering the 5,000-meter course (just over three miles) in 18:26.

Sophomore Dugan Flanders finished second for the Dogs in 23rd, and sophomore Peder Thompson was third for the Dogs in 31st.

Senior Chris Utsch (40th) and eighth grader Jamison Wall (41st) finished one second apart to complete the Dogs' team score.

The cross country teams had a pizza outing after the meet, and it looked like to coach Darrel Carstens that they had eaten pizza before the race. 'We did not do well," he said. "Focus is lacking at this time and will need to be taken care of before the conference, subsection etc. We seem to be jogging and running, but not racing and competing."

This week, the Dogs ran in the conference meet on Tuesday at Sauk Centre. Next week, they will start their postseason schedule with the subsection meet at Annandale on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 4:30 p.m.
