Bulldogs get fifth victory at Becker
The Bulldogs traveled to Becker last Monday for their final regular season meet. The section meet will also be held at Becker so the Bulldogs paid very close attention to the course so they'll know where to go when it counts most.|
"The section meet is here and after today I'm confident we're going to run well at sections," said coach Darrel Carstens.
The Bulldogs won their fifth meet of the season, beating Big Lake by six points, 43-49. Big Lake placed 11th in Class A last year and are highly ranked this year.
The Bulldogs also topped a number of their sectional rivals in the meet: Cathedral, Albany, and Crosby-Ironton.
The Bulldogs were paced by four runners in the top ten. Senior Jen Hess, the defending Class A individual champion, ran a great race, taking first place. Once again, the three musketeers couldn't be split far apart. Eighth grader Brooke Schmitz placed fifth; seventh grader Kacy Nehowig ran into seventh place; and only a second behind her in eighth place was ninth grader Kim Hess.
Junior Mandy Mayer (pictured at right) was the fifth runner again for the Bulldogs. She placed 22nd.
Just a few seconds behind Mayer was seventh grader Tanis Beireis, who placed 27th in her first varsity meet. Beireis earned a varsity opportunity by placing second in her last junior high race.
Trisha Wendlandt was Paynesville's final runner. She placed 55th.
"It was a very good day for Paynesville girls cross country," said Carstens proudly.
The Bulldogs run in the West Central Conference North meet at Albany on Thursday, Oct. 11. They also run at Albany next Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the subsection meet. Both meets start at 4 p.m.
