Boys take sixth place at Becker

By Freddie Stock

Tommy Flannigan On Monday, Sept. 30, the Bulldogs boysÕ cross country team ran at Becker, on another beautiful golf course. This meet was composed of a lot of the teams that the Dogs will be running against for the section championship later this year on the same course in Becker.

This made the meet important because it is the same course that the Dogs will have to master to go to state. Last week, the Bulldogs, running without senior captain Riley Flanders again, finished sixth.

Senior Tommy Flannigan was the second Bulldog runner at Becker last week. He finished 21st in 19:17.

Some very tough teams were there last week, like Crosby-Ironton, ranked third in state in Class A, and Pine City and Big Lake, both Class AA schools with some very good runners.

The weather last week was very warm, in fact it was the hottest weather for a meet that the Dogs have run in all year long. It caused some problems for some runners, but the Dogs persisted and were not fazed by the heat. They didnÕt allow the heat or the competition to intimidate them.

Senior Freddie Stock was the first Paynesville runner to finish. He finished in 19th place. Right behind him again was senior Tommy Flannigan, who finished two places back in 21st.

Back another six places was the DogsÕ third runner, junior Chad Wyffels, in 27th. Back a little farther in the pack was sophomore Jason Wendroth in 33rd. And right on his heels was sophomore Matt Mehr in 34th, one second behind.

The Dogs once again had a good pack. Their top five runners were all within 45 seconds of each other.

PaynesvilleÕs sixth and final runner in the varsity race was sophomore Chris Utsch in 61st.

Eighth grader Dugan Flanders had another great race, winning his second junior high race of the year.

This week, the dogs ran on Tuesday at Long Prairie again for the conference championship.

Next week, the Dogs will run at Albany on Tuesay, Oct. 15, for the subsection meet. This meet starts at 4:30 p.m.
