Netters fall, but win set against Sauk

By Jenny Habben

Mindy Meagher The Bulldogs lost four-game matches to two state-ranked conference opponents last week.

The Bulldogs lost to Sauk Centre and St. Cloud Cathedral at home last week. Sauk Centre is ranked sixth in Class AA, while Cathedral is tenth.

Against Sauk Centre, the Bulldogs won a game from the Streeters for the first time in three years.

Mindy Meagher led the Bulldogs in blocking against Cathedral with two solo blocks and nine assists.

The Streeters flew to an easy 15-2 victory in the first game on Tuesday, Sept. 25, but Paynesville started to pull their act together in the second game. The Bulldogs' improved play wasn't enough to stop the momentum of Sauk Centre, but the Streeters did have to fight a bit harder, winning 15-6.

In the third game, junior Hannah Braun served seven points to give the Bulldogs a lead. Braun had five ace serves.

Sauk Centre fought their way back to cut into Paynesville's lead, but the Bulldogs came out on top and won 15-13 by making smart plays and placing the ball in open spots.

Paynesville's communication dropped immensely in the fourth game allowing Sauk Centre to take the fourth and final game 15-4.

One server from Sauk Centre gave the Bulldogs lots of problems, recording 13 ace serves during the match.

"The games were really fun," said senior Missy Bachman. "We were playing true Bulldog volleyball."

The Bulldogs hosted LPGE yesterday and will be playing at Melrose on Thursday, Oct. 4. The B- and C-squad matches against Melrose will start at 6:30 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. Next Tuesday, Oct. 9, the Bulldogs play at Albany.

Cathedral 3, Paynesville 1
Tenth-ranked St. Cloud Cathedral beat the Bulldogs in four games on Thursday. Cathedral won the first game 15-9, but the Bulldogs' passing improved from their previous game and their hits were well placed. Paynesville fought for everything by trying to get a touch on every ball. The Bulldogs dug up some really nice hits by Cathedral, as did St. Cloud, and several long volleys made it an interesting match.

The second game went in Paynesville's favor, 15-12, to tie the match at one game each.

The third game was close, with control of the ball going back and forth between both teams, but St. Cloud came out on top, 15-10.

The fourth game was very exciting with good plays being made on both sides of the net. Control went back and forth in the seesaw game, but Cathedral won the game 15-12 and the match.

The Bulldogs' blocking came on fire during this match. Junior Mindy Meagher had two solo ace blocks and added nine assists. Senior Ashley Wall and junior Morgan Martinson each had an ace block. Wall added seven assists and Martinson contributed six.

Senior Sara Lieser was perfect in 15 service attempts, including two aces, and added 17 digs for the Bulldogs.
