By Coach Kyle Nehowig

Ryan Schneider The Paynesville Bulldog football team won their third game in a row and improved their record to 4-1 with a 59-25 conference victory over Morris on Friday night. The Bulldogs scored nine touchdowns to beat the Tigers in front of a huge Homecoming crowd.

Senior Ryan Schneider (16) made big plays to help the Bulldogs score two first quarter touchdowns against Morris.

The Bulldogs rushed for seven touchdowns - including four by junior running back Milan Virant - and returned a punt for a touchdown and scored their first touchdown on a pass play to beat the Tigers in a high-scoring game.

The Bulldogs started out a little shaky, as they fell behind the Tigers in a wild first quarter. The Tigers passed their way down the field and scored on a 14-yard pass play to take a 6-0 lead.

The Buldogs scored on junior Kevin Mehr's four-yard run and then went ahead 13-6 thanks to a 61-yard punt return by senior Ryan Schneider.

The Tigers' quarterback Todd Nohl connected with senior wideout Ryan Stoick on a 55-yard pass for a touchdown to tie the score at 13.

But the Bulldogs responded again with a drive capped by a 12-yard run by Virant. Another Josh Kampsen extra point concluded the first quarter scoring with Paynesville ahead 20-13.

Virant scored again in the second quarter, this time on a 16-yard run off left tackle. The Bulldogs now had a 27-13 lead.

This lead did not last long as the Tigers again passed the ball down the field and scored on another pass play from Nohl to Stoick, this time from 33 yards out.

The score at the half was Paynesville 27 and Morris 13.

The third quarter was the turning point of the game for the Bulldogs, as they ran for 148 yards in the quarter to take control of the game. The Bulldogs marched the ball down the field on the ground. and quarterback Chris Fuchs scored on a two-yard sneak to open the scoring in the third quarter.

Five minutes later, Virant found the end zone again on a one-yard run to increase the Paynesville lead to 40-19.

The fourth quarter started like the third quarter had ended, as the Bulldogs' punishing ground game wore down the Tigers' defense. Virant scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a four-yard run to make the score 46-19. Two minutes later Josh Kampsen threw a 26-yard halfback option pass to senior end Nic Glenz to make the score 52-19.

Morris scored their last touchdown of the night on Nohl's fourth touchdown pass to bring the score to 52-25. The Tigers were held to 54 yards on the ground, but threw for 415 yards against the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs ended the scoring when Josh Kampsen took a fullback trap play for 23 yards and a touchdown, and then kicked another extra point to make the final score Paynesville 59, Morris 25.

The victory improved the Bulldogs to 2-0 in the West Central Conference South.

The Bulldogs will have to improve their pass defense by Friday when they travel to Montevideo for a 7:30 p.m. game. Montevideo has one of the top passers in the area.
