By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs boys' cross country team finished 17th out of 14 Class A teams at the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday, dubbed "the world's largest cross country meet."

The Class A boys' field contained 220 runners.

Senior Matt Mehr led the Dogs in 30th place, followed by sophomore Dugan Flanders (76th) and senior Chris Utsch (90th). Eighth grader Josh Sturtz (121st) and senior Todd Thielen (131st) completed the Dogs' team score.

St. Cloud Cathedral won the Class A title at Milaca, followed by Fairmont, Pierz, United South Central, and Sauk Centre. Both Cathedral and Sauk Centre are conference rivals for the Dogs.

Esko (424 points in 15th place) and Hills-Beaver Creek (434 points in 16th place) beat the Dogs (448 points in 17th place), while Paynesville edged Cromwell (452 points in 18th place) and Rush City (453 points in 19th place).

"We ran quite tight," said coach Darrel Carstens about both team's performances, "as we had a very tough week of practice. However, I expected better results than we showed. We need to put our varsity teams together at this point of the season and get going on some team goals."

Paynesville had five runners in the tenth grade race and finished 11th out of 49 teams; they had five runners in the eighth grade race and finished 12th out of 60 teams; and they had six runners in the seventh grade race and finished 14th out of 54 teams.

The Bulldogs will host their only home meet of the season this week. On Thursday, the Dogs will host the Koronis Invite at Koronis Hills Golf Club, starting at 4:30 p.m. The meet schedule is: junior high boys at 4:30 p.m.; junior high girls at 4:35; varsity boys at 4:50; junior varsity boys at 5:15; varsity girls at 5:40; and junior varsity girls at 5:50 p.m.
