Boys win twice to stay
unbeaten for the season

By Coach Ric Koehn

The Chain of Lakes boys' soccer team maintained its perfect record this season with a pair of wins on the road this past week.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, the team traveled to St. Cloud where they took on the St. Cloud Tech junior varsity. After giving up a goal early in the game the boys came back to score three goals before halftime. The goals came from Dan Nies of Rocori, Steven Lavine of Eden Valley- Watkins and then from Nies again.

In the second half, junior Keegan Meagher of Paynesville scored to make it 4-1 before Nies completed a hat trick for a 5-1 lead. Two late goals from Tech made the final 5-3.

Meagher played the first half in goal with junior Chris Block of Paynesville and eighth grader Mitchell Meed of Paynesville holding down the goal in the second half.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, the boys traveled to Alexandria for a game against the Alexandria High School junior varsity. This was the first real test for the boys this season. Felipe Vercosa, a foreign exchange student from Brazil attending Rocori, scored the opening goal of the game off a corner kick just six minutes into the game.

But Alex responded with a goal less than a minute later. Meagher then scored in his third consecutive game to make the score 2-1, but near the end of the first half, Alex was awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball in front of the net. The kick was good, and the teams left the field tied at 2-2.

Early in the second half, Nies scored a goal with an assist from Tyler Theel of Rocori to make the score 3-2. The rest of the half was a tight defensive struggle with the boys hanging on for the win.

Block went all the way in goal and kept the team in the game with a number of fine saves.

The boys will now put their 3-0 record on the line with three games this week. They played the Becker varsity on Monday, will travel to Little Falls on Thursday and then to Spring Lake Park on Saturday.

Their next home game will be against the Minnewaska varsity on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 5 p.m. at Centennial Park in Richmond.
