Albany, Melrose sweep Dogs in volleyball matches

By Michael Jacobson

The Albany Huskies swept the Bulldogs volleyball team in a conference match on Thursday.

The undefeated Huskies scored seven of the final 12 points to win the first set 25-18, outscored the Dogs 14-7 to end the second set 25-17, and built a 16-5 lead before winning the third set 25-11.

Setting ball "We played better all around against Albany than we did in our match earlier in the week against Melrose," said coach Dawn Knoll. "The girls are working well together but we need someone to step up and take charge on the court. Our defense is much improved, and now we need to find the aggressive hitters and start putting the ball away against our opponents."

Senior Ashley Lieser sets a ball as teammates junior Chelsey Kalkbrenner (left) and Kristin Lang (right) prepare to attack the net in the Dogs' three-set loss to Albany on Thursday.

Seniors Shonda Martinson and Melanie Mages led the Dogs with six and five kills respectively. Mages also led the team with 11 digs. Senior Lynn Lieser led the Dogs in serving and in blocks.

This week, the Dogs (0-3) played at Sauk Centre on Tuesday. They will play at New London-Spicer on Thursday and in a varsity-only tournament at Montevideo on Saturday. Next week, the Dogs will host LPGE on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

"We played very sluggishly during this match," said Knoll. "We were not playing aggressively during our offensive opportunities. Our coverage was much better, but we need to put the ball away. We were not hitting the openings that Melrose was giving us."
