Girls beat NL-S again at BBE
The Paynesville girls' cross country team did it again. The team had another awesome meet last Thursday at Brooten and won their second title of the season.|
The Bulldogs took first place again by defeating the New London-Spicer Wildcats, the defending state champions. Paynesville scored 35 team points, improving from their first meet by seven points.
Newcomers Kacey Nehowig (front) and Mandy Mayer (back center) have helped the cross country team beat New London-Spicer twice.
The Wildcats came in second with a score of 67.
"The girls ran great and are a tough, competitive group. I'm really proud of their determination to be the best," said coach Darrel Carstens.
"We are talented, but the work ethic has taken us to the top," he added about the undefeated team that he described as a fun group.
Senior Jen Hess was the individual champion of the meet, winning by nearly a minute.
Paynesville had three other runners in the top ten. Brooke Schmitz, Kim Hess, and Kacy Nehowig all had a great races and placed higher than they did in the first meet at Morris. Schmitz battled for second the entire race but settled for third. Kim Hess was sixth, and Nehowig cracked the top ten in her second cross country race.
Mandy Mayer completed the Bulldogs' team score by placing 15th. Nicole Flint was 26th, and Danielle Lieser was 33rd for the Dogs.
The Dogs ran at LPGE on Tuesday and will run on the Wildcats' home turf on Thursday, Sept. 13, when they compete at the Little Crow Country Club between New London and Spicer.
