By Michael Jacobson

The Paynesville boys' cross country team opened their season by finishing ninth at a 16-team meet at Morris on Monday, Aug. 30.

Marshall, the defending Class AA state champion, easily won the meet with a team score of 33, followed by Perham, the Class A runner-up in 2003, at 50. Marshall swept the top three individual spots with runners that all are ranked in the top ten in the state, including winner Iman Yahya, a senior who was the state runner-up last fall.

Paynesville finished in the middle of the pack with a team score of 267.

Senior Matt Mehr earned a medal by placing 14th individually and led the Dogs.

Sophomore Dugan Flanders finished 53rd, senior Chris Utsch was 56th, sophomore Peder Thompson was 62nd, and eighth grader Nathan Friederichs was 84th to complete the Dogs' team score.

The Bulldogs, who have ten new runners this fall, fared well in the junior varsity and junior high races. The junior varsity team took second with Chris Block 11th, Colin Spooner 12th, A.J. Christian 16th, Brandon Soine 25th, and Keegan Meagher 28th.

In eighth grade, Josh Sturtz was fourth and Ezra Thompson was 21st. In the seventh-grade race, Tanner Wendroth was fifth, Mason Marshall 13th, Zach Friederichs 16th, and Devon Koerner 18th.

This week, the Bulldogs will run at the BBE Invite on Thursday, Sept. 9, starting at 5 p.m. The meet is held at the golf course in Brooten.
