Sauk Centre crushes the Bulldogs in season opener

The Paynesville football team traveled to Sauk Centre on Friday to take on the Mainstreeters for their season opener. The Mainstreeters dominated the Bulldogs and came away with a 25-6 win.

The Bulldogs could not get their offense going at all against the tough Sauk Centre defense. The Bulldogs were limited to one first down in the first half, which gave the Sauk Centre offense great field position to start their drives.

The Paynesville defense held the Mainstreeters to just seven points in the first half, thanks to interceptions by Jeremy Fuchs and T.J. Schultz deep in Paynesville's end of the field.

The Mainstreeters completely dominated the first half, but only led 7-0, after a one-yard touchdown plunge by senior quaterback Aaron Banke at the end of the first quarter.

Despite being outgained in the half, the Bulldogs were still in the game.

In the second half, the Paynesville team was hoping to play some better football, but it just didn't happen.

Sauk Centre took the second half kickoff and went 61 yards in 10 plays to score on a 10-yard pass play.

The Bulldogs offense again could not find a way to move the football and went three plays and punted. The Sauk Centre offense again moved right down the field and scored another touchdown through the air, which made the score Sauk Centre 19, Paynesville 0.

The Bulldogs put their best drive together on their next possesion. They finally got on the board at the end of the third quarter with a 35-yard run by Adam Schaefer. The score now stood at Sauk Centre 19, Paynesville 6.

On their next drive, Sauk Centre put the game away, going 61 yards in seven plays to score. The score was now Mainstreeters 25, Bulldogs 6.

The rest of the fourth quarter was a standoff as neither team had any success in moving the football. Both teams played their reserves to finish off the contest. The final score ended 25-6 in favor of Sauk Centre.

The Bulldogs will have to play with a lot more intensity than they showed against Sauk Centre if they plan on beating a tough Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City team this Friday in Grove City. ACGC defeated New London-Spicer 40-0 in their season opener.

Game time this Friday will be at 7 p.m. instead of the usual 7:30 p.m.
