St. Martin stays alive at regions

Turning two Roscoe hosted the Region 15C Amateur Baseball Tournament for the first time, with the opening weekend drawing 1,394 fans.

New Munich and Spring Hill each won two games over the weekend to move within one victory of advancing to state. The two teams will face each other on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 12 noon with a state berth on the line. St. Martin and New London-Spicer will play on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 2:30 p.m. in a loser's bracket game with these two teams needing two wins to advance to state.

St. Martin's Nathan Beier forces Regal's Josh Krupke at second in the seventh inning on Saturday. St. Martin beat Regal 10-0 but lost 4-2 to New Munich on Sunday. Regal was eliminated with two losses.

St. Martin was the only local team to survive the first weekend of regionals at Roscoe. St. Martin beat Regal 10-0 on Saturday but lost 4-2 to New Munich in ten innings on Sunday. Lake Henry and Regal lost two games each and were eliminated. The Lakers lost 3-1 to Spring Hill on Saturday and 11-6 to New London-Spicer on Sunday. Regal lost to St. Martin on Saturday and to Spring Hill 9-1 on Sunday.

New Munich 4, St. Martin 2
New Munich scored two runs in the top of the tenth inning and beat St. Martin 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. Chad Funk hit an RBI double to plate the first run in the tenth inning and then scored on a single by Karl Funk.

Hitting homerun St. Martin went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the tenth.

New Munich took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. St. Martin scored a run on an RBI double by Jesse Thelen in the sixth inning. The Martins tied the game with a run in the eighth inning.

St. Martin stranded 14 runners on base over the first nine innings. The Martins left the bases full in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings and they straneded eight runners in scoring position.

New Munich will play Spring Hill on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 12 noon in the winner's bracket at the regional tourney in Roscoe. St. Martin will play New London-Spicer at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game.

Spring Hill 9, Regal 1
Spring Hill eliminated Regal and advanced in the winner's bracket with a 9-1 victory on Sunday. Spring Hill scored two runs in the third inning, another two in the fifth inning, and five in the seventh inning to win.

Catching pop fly Pitchers Ethan Vogt and Matt Middendorf, both draftees from Elrosa, limited Regal to only one run on five hits.

Brandon Berg scored the only run for Regal after singling in the sixth inning.

Spring Hill used three hits, three batters hit by pitches, and a walk to score five runs in the seventh.

New London-Spicer eliminated Lake Henry on Sunday with an 11-6 victory at regions.

The Lakers scored five runs in the second inning, taking a 5-0 lead, but the Twins answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning, taking a 6-5 lead they would not relinquish.

New London-Spicer added four runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth, while Lake Henry scored only one more run.

St. Martin 10, Regal 0
St. Martin pounded five homers in beating Regal 10-0 in seven innings in the opening round of region playoffs on Saturday.

Sam Rothstein led the Martins' attack with three homers to right, hitting a pair of two-run homers and a solo shot. Jesse Thelen added a solo homer for St. Martin in the third inning, and Jake Thelen hit a three-run homer in the fourth.

The Martins hit back-to-back homers twice in the game. In the third, Rothstein hit a two-run homer and Jesse Thelen followed with a line-drive homer to left. In the fourth, Jake Thelen hit his three-run blast to left, and Rothstein followed with a solo shot to right.

St. Martin scored another run on Craig Hennen's RBI single in the fourth and two more in the fifth on Rothstein's third homer.

Ken Arceneau, meanwhile, pitched five shutout innings for St. Martin, allowing only one bunt single to Regal (8-11).

Spring Hill 3, Lake Henry 1
Spring Hill scored single runs in their first three at bats and beat Lake Henry 3-1 on Saturday in the opening round at regions.

Shawn Schoenberg singled to start the bottom of the first and scored on a two-out single by Chris Spanier to give Spring Hill a 1-0 lead. They scored an unearned run in the second inning, and then added a third run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly.

Lake Henry managed only four hits off Spring Hill's Rick Lieser and Elrosa draftee Ethan Vogt. The Lakers scored their only run in the fourth inning on Ryan Wuertz's solo homer to center.

The Lakers finished the season 18-8. Lake Henry - and St. Martin - had both swept New Munich and Spring Hill during the regular season this summer in the Stearns County League.
