Lake Henry wins twice at regions

By Michael Jacobson

The Lake Henry Lakers won two games in the Region 15C Tourney at Regal over the weekend and moved within one win of qualifying for state. The Lakers beat New London-Spicer 9-6 on Saturday and Norway Lake-Sunburg 8-7 on Sunday, advancing to face Elrosa, also unbeaten at regions, this Saturday, with a state berth on the line.

Trailing 7-5, Mike Stalboerger hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning for Lake Henry, propelling them to an 8-7 win against Norway Lake-Sunburg on Sunday. When Stalboerger's blast hit the scoreboard in left, scoring Josh Kampsen and Ryan Wuertz, who had both been hit by pitches, "the place went nuts," said Lakers manager Keith Lieser.

Norway Lake-Sunburg had taken a 5-1 lead with five runs in the bottom of the second. Lake Henry tied the game 5-5 with four runs in the top of the fourth, but NL-S took a 7-5 lead with two runs in the fifth. They held that lead until the top of the ninth, when Stalboerger hit his game-winning homerun.

Jon Lieser pitched two shutout innings of relief to earn the pitching win for the Lakers.

The Lakers will play Elrosa at 12 noon on Saturday in Regal, with the winner guaranteed a state berth. The loser will need to play again on Sunday at 12 noon. The Region 15C title game is scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

St. Martin, which lost to Elrosa 5-0 in the first round on Saturday, also stayed alive in the regional tournament by beating New London-Spicer 8-2 on Sunday.

The Martins broke open a 2-1 game by scoring five runs on six hits in the top of the sixth, expanding their lead to 7-1.

Both teams scored a run in the seventh inning to make the final 8-2. Nathan Beier and Jesse Thelen each had three hits for St. Martin, leading the Martins' 13-hit attack.

Ryan Nett pitched six innings for the victory, with Ken Arceneau earning a save with three innings of work.

With the win, St. Martin advanced to face New Munich in an elimination game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Regal. The Martins will need to win this game and again on Sunday at 12 noon to qualify for state. The Martins eliminated NL-S from regions with this 8-2 win.

The Lakers built a 9-2 lead and beat New London-Spicer in the first round of regions on Saturday, avenging a first-round loss to the Twins last year.

The Lakers broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the top of the third, with Doug Fuchs hitting an RBI double, Pat Mohs hitting an RBI single, and Roger Wuertz hitting a two-run single.

Jon Lieser and Josh Kampsen added RBI singles in the fifth, as the Lakers scored two more runs. They also scored single runs in the first, fourth, and seventh innings.

Wuertz pitched seven innings, allowing only two runs, for the victory on the hill.

The Lakers allowed four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Lieser earned a save by dousing the rally.

Elrosa 5, St. Martin 0
Elrosa ace Ethan Vogt, who will pitch for the Gophers next year, shut out the Martins on five hits as the Saints won the first-round region game 5-0 on Saturday.

It was easy to see why Vogt will be pitching Division I baseball next year, said St. Martin manager Carl Lieser, as he was "lights out" against the Martins.

In the early going, the Martins thought they eventually would catch up to his fastball, but Vogt shut them down, added Lieser. "He was on. Oh, was he bringing it," said Lieser.

Elrosa scored the only run they would need to back Vogt in the top of the first. They added four runs in the top of the eighth, breaking a 1-0 pitcher's duel between Vogt and St. Martin starter Scott Schlangen. An error to start the eighth inning led to all four runs being unearned.
