Lake Henry ousts St. Martin at regions

Josh KampsenLake Henry avenged two regular-season losses to St. Martin but ousting the Martins from the Region 15C baseball tournament in Richmond on Sunday. The Lakers beat the Martins 3-1 on Sunday, after both teams dropped their first game on Saturday.

Lake Henry had only three hits against St. Martin but scored three unearned runs, using walks, stolen bases, passed balls, and errors.

Jon Lieser scored a run in the bottom of the first for the Lakers, and Josh Kampsen and Lieser scored in the bottom of the sixth.

Josh Kampsen had this ball in his glove but it popped out when he hit the ground.

St. Martin had nine hits but did not score until the eighth inning. Nathan Schlangen doubled and scored on a single by Jesse Thelen. St. Martin loaded the bases and then Jake Thelen hit a line drive to centerfield - that would have scored at least two, maybe three runs - but Kampsen made a diving catch to end the inning.

St. Martin beat Lake Henry 8-4 in May and 13-7 in July, but pitcher Steve Schreifels - a draftee from Richmond who shut out the Martins in July - pitched seven innings to get the victory on Sunday. St. Martin (22-8) finished 11-2 in the Stearns County League this season and swept three games in the league playoffs. But they committed nine errors and allowed eight unearned runs in losing two games at regions.

Lake Henry (15-12) will play Norway Lake-Sunburg in the loser's bracket at the region tournament on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2:30 p.m.

Elrosa 5, St. Martin 3
St. Martin celebration Elrosa scored five unearned runs and beat St. Martin 5-3 in 11 innings in the opening round of the region playoffs on Saturday in Richmond.

Elrosa scored one unearned run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.

St. Martin then took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sam Rothstein doubled to left and scored on an error, as Luke Rothstein reached base. Luke scored on a two-out single by Ken Arceneau.

Elrosa scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead, as a two-out error by the Martins allowed two runs to score.

St. Martin tied the score in the eighth inning as Nathan Schlangen walked, stole second, and scored on another double to left by Sam Rothstein. The Martins had two chances to score him but could not get a hit.

In the ninth inning, St. Martin had another chance to win, as Carl Lieser doubled and draftee catcher Aaron Nett (from Farming) was intentionally walked, but Elrosa coaxed a ground-ball doubleplay to end the threat.

Elrosa scored two unearned runs in the 11th inning on a throwing error to win 5-3.

NL-S 3, Lake Henry 0
Tim Beasley, a draftee from Starbuck, pitched a complete-game shutout as New London-Spicer defeated Lake Henry 3-0 at regions on Saturday in Richmond.

NL-S broke a pitcher's duel between Beasley and the Lakers' Ryan Wuertz in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Wuertz dove on the mound to field a grounder and threw home for a force out. Catcher Jon Lieser threw to first, but the base umpire ruled that the NL-S runner beat the throw, to the consternation of the Lakers. The next batter - Tony Salonek - delivered a two-run single to center.

NL-S scored another run in the seventh inning, getting three straight hits. but the Lakers threw one runner out at the plate.

The Lakers had their best chances to score in the second, third, and eighth innings. They had two runners reach base in the second and third and had a runner at third with one out in the eighth.
