Six-team field set for region tourney at Regal

St. Martin blasted four homeruns to defeat Lake Henry 13-1 on Sunday and claim the Stearns County South title. With Sunday's amateur games, the lineup for the Region 15C tournament, to be held in Regal the next two weekends, is set.

Jesse Thelen bats On Saturday, Aug. 5, New Munich (North champ) will face Norway Lake-Sunburg (Cornbelt runner-up) at 10 a.m.; St. Martin (South champ) will play Elrosa (North runner-up) at 12:30 p.m.; and New London-Spicer (Cornbelt champ) will meet Lake Henry (South runner-up) at 3 p.m.

Jesse Thelen hit one of the four homeruns by St. Martin as they defeated Lake Henry 13-1 on Sunday to win the Stearns County League South.

On Sunday, Aug. 6, the New Munich/Norway Lake-Sunburg loser will play the Lake Henry/ New London-Spicer winner at 10 a.m.; the New Munich/NL-S winner will play the St. Martin/Elrosa winner at 12:30 p.m.; and the St. Martin/Elrosa loser will play the Lake Henry/NL-S loser at 3 p.m.

St. Martin claimed the South title behind power barrage of four homeruns in the first four innings. Nathan Schlangen hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first, as the Martins scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead, and added a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

Sam Rothstein hit a three-run shot in a five-run third for the Martins, and Jesse Thelen also hit a two-run homer (as did Schlangen) in the Martins' four-run fourth.

Josh Kampsen hit a solo homer for Lake Henry in the first inning, but the Lakers were shut out for the remaining eight innings.

Ryan Nett earned the pitching victory for St. Martin, going five innings. Ken Arceneau and Scott Schlangen combined to pitch four innings of shutout relief.

St. Martin drafted Farming pitcher Aaron Nett and Richmond catcher Jeron Lieser for regions; Lake Henry drafted Roscoe pitcher Brent Heinen and Richmond pitcher Dusty Adams.

NL-S 4, Paynesville 0
New London-Spicer defeated the Paynesville Pirates 4-0 on Saturday, ending the Pirates' playoff run. New London-Spicer proceeded to beat Norway Lake-Sunburg twice on Sunday - 8-6 in 14 innings and 26-4 in the nightcap - to claim the Cornbelt North title.

Local players drafted to play in the region tournament are: Paynesville pitcher Shannon Olmscheid (Norway Lake-Sunburg); Paynesville pitcher James Paul (New London-Spicer); and Regal pitcher Shane Rademacher (New London-Spicer).
