Paynesville Legion team advances to regions

The Paynesville American Legion baseball team won three games in district competition last week and advanced to regions.

Paynesville beat Kimball 21-0 on Monday, July 21, beat Sauk Centre 10-0 on Tuesday, July 22, and beat Holdingford 5-4 on Thursday, July 24, to clinch a region berth. Holdingford did rebound to beat Paynesville 14-7 on Friday, July 25, to claim the top spot from the district.

Both teams will play in the region tournament in Cross Lake, starting on Thursday, July 31.

Last week, Paynesville started the district playoff with back-to-back victories by the ten-run rule. Paynesville scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first against Kimball, scored 21 runs in four at bats, and beat Kimball 21-0 on Monday, July 21. Then they beat Sauk Centre 10-0 on Tuesday. Adam Kampsen hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to invoke the ten-run rule and also pitched five shutout innings.

In their first game against Holdingford - on Thursday - Kampsen scored on a single by Justin Butkofski in the top of the seventh inning to lift Paynesville to a 5-4 victory, clinching a regional berth. Kampsen scored with a "beautiful slide at the plate to avoid the tag," said coach Brad Skoglund.

Paynesville rallied for the victory, overcoming deficits of 3-1 and 4-3, tying the game with two runs in the fifth and again with a run in the sixth before scoring the game-winner in the seventh.

Holdingford had a leadoff triple in the bottom of the seventh, but Paynesville got three ground outs and prevented the runner from scoring.

On Friday, Holdingford beat Paynesville 14-7 to claim the top seed from the district in the region tournament. Paynesville allowed 13 hits and committed eight errors in the loss. Kampsen hit three homers for Paynesville...to center, off a light tower in left, and over the score board in right.

At the region tournament in Cross Lake, Paynesville will start play on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. against Verndale. If they win, they will play at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon; if they lose, they will play at 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. The regional tourney lasts until Sunday.

The state tournament will be held in Ely from Aug. 8-10. Paynesville played in the American Legion state tournament in Ely in 1999.
