Little leaguers split games

Roscoe 15
Regal 9

Roscoe won the first round of their little league playoffs against Regal 15-9, on Wednesday night, in Regal.

Mike Leither started but only went one and two-thirds innings. Russ Leyendecker threw the last five and one-third innings allowing four runs on three hits while striking out 11.

Russ Leyendecker led Roscoe at the plate as he was 3-4 with two triples. Leither, Drew Nathan, and Ben Moser all had two hits for Roscoe.

Regal jumped out to seven runs in the first two innings off of Leither. Roscoe had scored one run in the top of the second, but at the end of the inning found themselves trailing 7-1.

Roscoe closed the gap in the top of the third when they scored three runs.

Roscoe took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth by scoring four runs to make the score 8-7, Roscoe.

Roscoe then put the game away in the sixth when they scored seven more to take a 15-7 lead. Regal got two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as they lost 15-9.

Spring Hill 9

Roscoe was eliminated from the playoffs with a loss to Spring Hill, 9-2 on Sunday, in Spring Hill.

Mike Leither started and was relieved by Drew Nathan and Russ Leyendecker.

Roscoe was held hitless in the game, by Spring Hill pitcher Shawn Schoenberg.

Roscoe was able to get two runs in the game. They got one run in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning.

Roscoe also committed seven errors in the game which led to the loss.

Roscoe finished the regular season with a 2-8 record. They were also 1-1 in the playoffs.

Willmar 11
Paynesville 5

Willmar defeated Paynesville 11-5 on Friday in the Willmar Tournament.

Chris Beier started on the mound for Paynesville and went two innings before he was relieved.

Justin Butkofski led Paynesville at the plate as he was 3-3. James Paul also had a good game at the plate as he was 1-2 with a run scored.

Paynesville scored one run in the first, but allowed Willmar to get five runs in the bottom of the inning, and were down 5-1.

Both teams scored two runs in the second inning.

For Paynesville with one out Cody Flanders singled and was followed by a walk to put runners on first and second. Derek Stanger then singled to drive in Flanders. Another run scored on a walk and Paynesville was down 5-3.

It didn't stay that way for long as Willmar added two more in the bottom of the inning to retake a four-run lead at 7-3.

Paynesville had to play catch up all night and didn't have enough energy as they fell 11-5.

Paynesville 11
New Ulm 0

Paynesville blanked New Ulm 11-0, on Friday night, in Willmar.

Chris Beier once again started on the mound and was helped by good defense and good relief pitching by Derek Stanger and James Paul.

Stanger led Paynesville at the plate as he was 2-3 with two runs scored and a home run. Mike Mueller, Chris Beier, and Mitch Mackedanz all were 2-3 in the game for Paynesville.

Paynesville jumped out to an early lead as they scored eight runs in the first inning. That would prove to be more than enough, but they didn't stop there. They added another one in the second when Beier drove in Mueller.

Then in the sixth Paynesville scored two more, highlighted by the Stanger home run.

Paynesville 6
Cottage Grove 6

Paynesville and Cottage Grove tied 6-6, in the Willmar Tournament on Friday. Chris Beier started on the mound and threw the first two innings, and was relieved in the third inning.

Derek Stanger went 2-3 to lead Paynesville at the plate. Mike Mueller, Mitch Mackedanz, and Quinn Knisley collected the only other Paynesville hits.

Cottage Grove scored three runs in their half of the first inning, with Paynesville being held to two.

Stanger led off with a double and was followed by a James Paul walk. Mueller then singled to drive in both Stanger and Paul.

Paynesville added one more in the second and three in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.

But Cottage Grove came back to tie the game in the fifth. They scored three runs, and both teams were held scoreless in the last inning for the game to end in a tie at six.

Chanhassen 14
Paynesville 5

Paynesville lost to Chanhassen 14-5, on Saturday, in the Willmar Tournament.

Trevor Schwandt started on the mound and only pitched the first inning. He was relieved by Ryan Hess and Chris Beier.

Adam Fuchs led Paynesville at the plate as he was 2-2 with a run scored. Derek Stanger again had a good game at the plate as he was 2-3.

Paynesville fell behind early as they gave up two runs in the first inning and six in the second.

Paynesville scored one in the first when Mike Mueller singled and was followed by a Justin Butkofski double which scored him.

Down 8-1, Paynesville scored a couple of runs in the third when Schwandt led off with a single and Fuchs followed him with another single. Stanger then drove in Schwandt, and Butkofski drove in Fuchs to make the score 8-3, Chan-hassen.

Paynesville was never really able to get back into the game as they lost by a final of 14-5.

Waite Park 6

Paynesville defeated Waite Park 11-6, to finish in third place in the Willmar Tournament on Saturday.

Chris Beier started on the mound and was relieved by Ryan Hess and Derek Stanger.

Paynesville hit the ball incredibly well in the game. Stanger was 3-3 with three runs scored, and James Paul was 2-2 with three runs scored. Justin Butkofski, Cody Flanders, and Trevor Schwandt all had two hits in the game for Paynesville.

Paynesville got out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the first inning. Stanger and Paul led off with singles. Stanger scored when Butkofski grounded to short, and Beier drove in Paul with a double.

Waite Park took a short lead in the second when they scored three runs, but Paynesville came right back.

Paynesville answered with three of their own to make the score 5-3, Paynesville.

Waite Park wouldn't roll over and die as they added three in the fourth, but Paynesville came back one more time with three runs in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to lock up the victory.
