Paynesville to host district Legion tourney

District Legion Baseball Tournament

Paynesville will be the host of the 6th District Legion Baseball Tournament this weekend July 30 & 31.

Paynesville will face Ironton in the first round of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The other first round games are Holdingford against St. Augusta, and Pierz against Menagha.

The second round of the tournament and the championship game will be held on Saturday in Paynesville. The winner of the tournament will advance to the state legion tournament held in Ely.

Roscoe defeated Greenwald 10-6 on Thursday night, in Roscoe.

Eric Kunstleben started and pitched five innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs while walking eight and striking out four. Todd Leyendecker came in and pitched the final two innings giving up no hits, but two unearned runs.

Todd Leyendecker also led the Rangers at the plate as he was 3-3 with three doubles. Justin Mackedanz and Brent Heinen each had two hits for Roscoe in the game.

Greenwald held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning, when Roscoe scored three runs.

Todd Leyendecker led off with one of his three doubles in the game. Mackedanz then followed with an RBI single. Robert Leyendecker also singled, and Tim Lieser followed with a double to drive in another run. Lieser then came around to score when Luke Christian reached on an error.

After Greenwald scored one run to make the score 4-3, the Rangers came back with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to open up an 8-3 lead.

Curt Christian reached base on an error, and Heinen followed with a single. Todd Leyendecker then drove both of them in with another double. After Robert Leyendecker reached on a pass ball, Luke Christian and Kunstleben had back-to-back singles to drive in a couple of runs for the Rangers.

Despite a three-run comeback in the sixth, Roscoe held the lead and added to it in the seventh by scoring two runs to make the score 10-6.

Roscoe now is 1-0 in the playoffs.

Paynesville 11
Eagle Valley 1

Paynesville defeated Eagle Valley 11-1, on Monday night in Paynesville.

Brent Heinen started on the mound and went the complete game, which was only five innings due to the ten-run rule. Heinen only allowed one run on three hits while striking out nine.

Heinen also led the team at the plate going 2-3 with a triple. Ben Bork had two hits for Paynesville as he was 2-4.

Paynesville allowed one run in the top of the first before coming back to score six in the bottom of the second.

Paynesville then added three more in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fifth.

Heinen was able to keep Eagle Valley off the board the rest of the way and Paynesville cruised to an easy victory.

Browerville 9

Paynesville lost to Browerville 9-7, on Wednesday night, in Browerville.

Jon Lieser started with Justin Mackedanz and Nate Schutz throwing relief. Schutz was tagged with the loss.

Shaun Fleischhacker hit a home run for Paynesville in the third inning. That was the offensive highlight and was the biggest offensive spark of the game. Ryan Schneider was also 1-2 for Paynesville in the game.

Schutz was given the loss, but it wasn't because of poor pitching. Paynesville played awful defense committing five errors in the sixth inning.

Paynesville scored one run in the top of the third inning and took the lead. Browerville tied up the game at one in the bottom of the third.

Paynesville then came right back with three in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth to make the score 7-1.

Browerville came right back with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. The runs were attributed to Paynesville errors.

Paynesville was not able to regain the lead in the top of the seventh and fell 9-7.

Paynesville lost to Holdingford 8-6 on Friday night to get eliminated from the district tournament. Paynesville, though, had an automatic birth into the regional tournament, because they are hosting the tournament.

Justin Mackedanz started on the mound for Paynesville and went six innings. Scott Braun came in and pitched one inning of shut out relief.

Shaun Fleischhacker once again led Paynesville at the plate as he hit his second home run of the week and was 1-2 in the game. Brent Heinen, Curtis Christian, Chad Fleischhacker, and Braun had the other hits for Paynesville in the game.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second, Paynesville came back by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Holdingford closed the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third, but Paynesville again scored multiple runs in the inning making the score 5-2, Paynesville.

Holdingford didn't give up though, they added four runs in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-5, then added two more in the seventh to ice the game, making the score 8-5.

Paynesville got one run in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as they fell 8-6.

Paynesville will play Friday night at 7:30 in the first round of the regional tournament against Ironton.
