Paynesville eliminated from playoffs; Lake Henry loses

Spanier out The most promising season for the Paynesville Pirates came to an end, the same way as the last three seasons, by losing to Norway Lake-Sunburg 6-5 on Sunday.

The Pirates could not duplicate their first round playoff victory in Sunburg as they were eliminated from the playoffs.

Dan Starken started on the mound for Paynesville and left after the second inning and was relieved by Jason Schlecht. Schlecht pitched great al-lowing only one run in his five innings of relief. Starken re-entered the game in the eighth and was tagged with the loss.

Pat Mohs led the Pirates at the plate going 3-3 with a two-run homer in the eighth that gave Paynesville the lead at 5-4. Josh Williams also had two hits in the Pirates' loss.

Paynesville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, that didn't last very long, because the Lakers came back with four in the bottom of the second sparked by a two-run home run by Josh Kittering.

Schlecht then kept the Lakers off the board for the next five innings, allowing the Pirates to chip away at the Laker lead.

Paynesville fought their way back into the game scoring runs in the third and fourth innings.

The score was 4-3, and remained that way until the eighth inning. Darren Michaelis reached base and then stole second with Mohs at the plate. With Michaelis on second Mohs hit his fourth home run of the season, a line drive to right center field, that gave the Pirates a 5-4 lead.

Schlecht started the eighth, but struggled and Starken came in to relieve him. Starken got two of the guys out right away, then intentionally walked Laker leadoff hitter James Cortez, to face Davis Schwinghammer. He doubled and gave the Lakers the lead at 6-5.

Paynesville could not score in the ninth, and took the loss 6-5. Paynesville is eliminated from the playoffs, their final record was 9-12.

St. Martin 17
Lake Henry 9

St. Martin took a 1-0 lead in the best two-of-three game series against Lake Henry on Sunday, with a 17-9 victory.

Tim Lieser started on the mound for the Lakers and was relieved in the fifth by Mike Stalboerger who was tagged with the loss.

Steve Lieser led Lake Henry at the plate as he was 3-4 with three runs and three stolen bases. Tom Ludwig and Jeff Olmscheid were each 2-5 in the game.

Danny Arceneau had a big game as he hit two home runs for St. Martin. One of his homers was a grand slam. Jeff Schmitz was 4-5 to help St. Martin get the win.

Lake Henry will now host St. Martin for the second game of the series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Regal 8

Regal was defeated by O'Hara's 10-8, on Friday night in Watkins.

Wade Von Eschen started on the mound and was relieved by Jeremy Glenz and Tim Beier.

Ron Fuchs and Dave Oerhlien were each 2-3 in the game. Brad Lieser homered for Regal.

Regal had a big fifth inning as they scored six runs. The highlight of the inning was the solo-home run by Lieser. The homer was followed by six more hits in the inning.
