Legion team advances to district tourney

The Paynesville American Legion team won two games, before losing in the sub-district final, and qualified for the district tourney this week in St. Cloud.

Derek tags Paynesville lost to Holdingford in the sub-district final 10-0 on Thursday but had already qualified for the district tournament, since Holdingford is hosting the district tourney and had an automatic bid.

Paynesville, knowing it already had qualified for districts, played short-handed on Thursday and was outhit 11-2 by Holdingford, who beat Paynesville for the second time this season by the ten-run rule.

The double-elimination district tourney will be held this weekend in St. Cloud from Thursday, July 27, to Sunday, July 30. Paynesville will play Sebeka at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Dick Putz Field. If they win, they will play again at Joe Faber Field at 5 p.m. on Thursday. If they lose, they will play again at Dick Putz Field at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Paynesville 6, Sauk Centre 2
Paynesville scored three runs in the bottom of the first and defeated Sauk Centre 6-2 on Tuesday, July 18, to advance to the sub-district final.

Danny bats After Paynesville scored a run to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Shane Kampsen hit a two-run single with two outs to give Paynesville a 3-1 lead.

Paynesville expanded that lead to 4-1 on Trent Hansen's RBI single in the second inning.

After Sauk scored a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 4-1, Kampsen hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth and scored on a single by Derek Looman, making the final score 6-2.

James Paul pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run, for Paynesville in the game.

Paynesville 12, Browerville 2
Paynesville scored 12 runs in three at bats and beat Browerville 12-2 in five innings in their sub-district opener on Monday, July 17.

Paynesville jumped to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first with James Paul hitting his first homerun over the leftfield fence, a three-run shot for Paynesville. A walk to Derek Stanger and hits by Steve Gerding and Keegan Meagher scored a fourth run for Paynesville.

Gerding drove home the lone run in the second inning for Paynesville.

In the third, leading 5-1, Paynesville had nine consecutive batters reach base, seven by hit, and scored seven runs. Derek Looman started the rallly with a leadoff single, and Alex Naujokas, Paul, Stanger, Gerding, Meagher, and Shane Kampsen added RBI singles.
