Lake Henry, St. Martin advance in playoffs

Lake Henry and St. Martin advanced in the Stearns County League playoffs with road victories on Sunday, while the Paynesville Pirates lost in the Corn Belt League playoffs and were eliminated.

St. Martin beat Farming 6-1 on Sunday and Lake Henry beat Richmond 4-2, both sweeping their best-of-three playoff series.

St. Martin improved to 19-6 for the year with a 6-1 victory over Farming, eliminating the Flames and avenging last year's playoff loss to Farming. St. Martin built a 6-0 lead before Farming scored their only run in the bottom of the ninth.

Ken Arceneau pitched a complete game for St. Martin, allowing only a solo homer to Aaron Nett in the bottom of the ninth. Arceneau struck out 11 Farming hitters.

The Martins had 12 hits and were aided by four Farming errors.

St. Martin finished 11-2 in league this year, topping the standings for the second straight year. Last year, though, Farming upset St. Martin in the playoffs and advanced to the state. This year, St. Martin prevailed two games to none.

St. Martin will host Lake Henry on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in St. Martin to determine who is the top seed from the south division at regionals.

Richmond will host regionals starting the first weekend in August.

Lake Henry 4, Richmond 2
Lake Henry rallied to beat Richmond 4-2 in Richmond on Sunday, defeating the Royals two games to none in their playoff series.

Richmond scored a run in the second inning and led 1-0 until the sixth, when Josh Kampsen singled, scored on a single by Jon Lieser, who in turn scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Schmitz.

The Lakers added to their lead in the seventh and ninth innings, with Doug Fuchs singling in both innings and coming around to score, on a hit by Herbie Weidner in the seventh and on a sacrifice fly by Weidner in the ninth.

Ryan Wuertz pitched six innings to get the victory for Lake Henry with Fuchs pitching three innings to get the save.

Lake Henry will play at St. Martin on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The Paynesville Pirates were eliminated from the Corn Belt League playoffs on Sunday in Norway Lake, when dealt a 3-1 loss by the Norway Lake-Sunburg Lakers.

Norway Lake-Sunburg scored three runs in the first inning, all the runs they would need. The Pirates were held to four hits. They scored their only run in the fifth inning when Josh Williams scored on a hit by Steve Barten.

Chris Stanley pitched a complete game for the Pirates, hurling eight shutout innings after allowing three runs in the first inning.
