Farming upsets St. Martin, 6-3

Farming 6, St. Martin 3
The Farming Flames scored three runs in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and beat St. Martin 6-3 on Sunday in St. Martin, taking a 1-0 lead in the playoff series.

Craig Klein and Greg Holthaus had RBI singles for Farming in the ninth inning.

Jake Thelen St. Martin, seeded #1 after going 11-2 in league in the regular season, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Farming (now 7-7 in league) erased that deficit with Aaron Nett's two-run homer in the fourth inning, starting a flurry of scoring. The Martins tied the score with a run in the bottom of the fourth, allowed Farming to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, and tied the score again in the bottom of the fifth at 3-3.

Third baseman Jake Thelen throws out a Farming runner at first from his knees.

After scoring three runs in five innings against Farming starter Ted Nett, the Martins were unable to score in three innings against Aaron Nett, who also earned the pitching victory.

Ryan Nett allowed two hits but struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.

The Martins used some defensive gems to keep the score tied in the seventh and eighth innings. Second baseman Jim Arceneau made an over-the-shoulder catch with two outs to end one threat. With two on and nobody out, the Martins turned a 1-5-4 double play on a bunt attempt to quell an eighth-inning threat.

The Martins will play at Farming on Sunday in a must-win game for St. Martin. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
