The team placed fourth in state last year as 14-year-olds.

Paynesville lost to Cottage Grove but then beat Orono, Baxter, Waite Park, and Farmington to take first place and advance to state.

The team opened the tourney on Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Cottage Grove. Paynesville made four errors in this game, but made only three more in four more games. Cottage Grove scored two unearned runs in the victory.

Paynesville rebounded with an 8-6 victory over Orono on Saturday. Paynesville broke a 6-6 tie with two runs in the fifth inning. Jamie Paul doubled home the winning run and then scored himself in the fifth.

Paynesville scored five runs in the second inning, getting walks from Ryan Hess and Mark Andrie and RBI singles from Sam Bayer, Alex Naujokas, and Derek Stanger.

On Sunday, Paynesville dominated Baxter 8-1 and Waite Park 7-0. John Hemingson pitched five shutout innings against Baxter, and Jamie Paul, Hemingson, and Ryan Hess combined to shut out Waite Park.

Hemingson got the win against Farmington in the championship game, too, pitching five innings. He also hit a solo homerun. Derek Stanger, who had nine RBIs in the five games, batted in two runs in the game, with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.

The 15-year-olds will play in the state tournament in Eagan on July 25-27.
