Pirates hang on to beat Sauk, 15-13

The Pirates built leads of 3-1, 10-5, and 15-6, and then held on to beat Sauk Centre 15-13 Sunday night in Paynesville.

The Pirates scored 15 runs in three at bats. They scored three times in the first, seven times in the fifth, and five times in the sixth.

The Titans scored seven unanswered runs in the last three innings, but fell short in their comeback attempt.

The two teams combined for 28 runs, 30 hits, and 13 errors. The Titans had 17 hits, but also committed nine errors.

The victory raised the Pirates record to 4-5 in the County Line League.

The Pirates also won two exhibition games recently. They beat Kingston 10-7 on Friday, June 16, and Spring Hill 12-1 on Thursday, June 22.

The PiratesÕ overall record is now 9-6.

Mike StalboergerÕs sacrifice fly scored Steve Lieser from third for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth as the Lakers beat the Royals 15-14.

Richmond took an early 7-3 lead after scoring three times in the third inning, but the Lakers rallied to take the lead with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Trailing 13-11, Richmond scored three times in the top of the eighth to take the lead, but Lake Henry scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to win.

The teams combined for seven home runs. Richmond hit four, and Lake Henry hit three.

Chad Spanier, Tom Ludwig, and Stalboerger hit solo homers for the Lakers.

Stalboerger also earned the pitching victory with five innings of relief work. Roger Wuertz pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

The Lakers evened their Stearns County League record at 5-5 with the victory.

Jake Thielen and Sam Rothstein hit home runs in the fifth to give St. Martin the lead, and Luke Rothstein added a two-run single in the seventh as the host Martins beat the Rangers 7-4 Sunday.

Roscoe had a 2-0 lead, but St. Martin scored once in the fourth and three times in the fifth. Thielen hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Sam Rothstein added a solo shot.

In the seventh, Thielen singled and Ken Arceneau doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Luke Rothstein scored them both with a single.

The Rangers scored on Jeff WelleÕs RBI single in the fourth, scoring Mark Winter, and Lee SchleperÕs two-run homer in the ninth.

Luke Rothstein earned the pitching victory in six innings of relief.

The Rangers are now 3-7 in league.

American Legion

The Paynesville American Legion baseball team lost at Melrose 12-2 on Thursday, June 22.

A bright spot for Paynesville was three hits in three at bats for Logan Louis. Curtis Christian and Adam Kampsen had a hit apiece for Paynesville.

Christian also pitched for Paynesville.

Coach Brad Skoglund said Kampsen played very well at shortstop and noted that outfielder Tim Johnson made two nice running catches.

Paynesville also lost at home to Cold Spring on Monday, June 19. Cold Spring scored five times in the third and seven times in the top of the seventh to win 15-4.

Paynesville committed nine errors in the game, which led to 13 unearned runs for Cold Spring. Skoglund said Justin Mackedanz pitched well in a losing cause. Adam Larson pitched in relief for Paynesille.

Ryan Schneider had two hits, including a triple, for Paynesville. Max Meagher also had a triple, Pat Rohe had a double, and Jeremy Fuchs had a single.

Paynesville now has a record of 1-4 for the season.
