Roscoe rallies to beat Lake Henry 2-1

Greg Heinen Greg Heinen (pitching at right) scored the winning run for Roscoe when Brent Heinen, his brother, beat out an infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Roscoe beat Lake Henry 2-1 Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Rangers are now 3-6 in the Stearns County League, and the Lakers dropped to 4-5.

The Rangers' Greg Heinen and the Lakers' Ryan Wuertz each pitched six shutout innings to start the game. The Rangers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. Jeff Welle walked and scored on Lee Schleper's double to right center.

Roscoe threatened again in the bottom of the eighth, as Brent Heinen doubled and the Rangers loaded the bases with no one out on a bunt hit and a single to left. The Lakers' Mike Stalboerger escaped the inning with a strikeout for the first out and an inning-ending double play for the other two.

The Lakers tied the game with a run in the top of the ninth. Doug Fuchs reached on an infield error, and Adam Miller had an infield single. Steve Lieser scored Fuchs with a single to center field.

Greg Heinen, who came within one out of a complete game shutout, put his frustrations into his lead off at bat in the ninth. He laced a liner off the fence in right center to start the inning for the Rangers. After a failed bunt attempt, an intentional walk to Tony Orbeck, and another out, Brent Heinen hit a grounder deep into the hole at short and beat out the infield hit. Greg Heinen scored from third to win.

Brent Heinen earned the victory in relief for Roscoe, and Stalboerger took the loss for Lake Henry.

The Martins broke open a 3-2 game at Greenwald with five runs in the seventh inning, and then added three insurance runs to win 11-2 Sunday.

Nate Schlangen led off the top of the seventh with a single for St. Martin and Jake Thielen walked. Sam Rothstein doubled to score the first run, and Carlton Hennen had a two-run single. Ken Arceneau doubled to put runners at second and third. Hennen scored on a wild pitch, and Arceneau scored on a ground out to end the scoring for the Martins.

The Martins had 15 hits, while they held Greenwald to four. St. Martin led 3-0, but Greenwald scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to cut the gap to one. The Martins promptly scored five times in the seventh.

Sam Rothstein earned the victory as the Martins raised their record to 4-5. Luke Rothstein pitched two perfect innings of relief.

Melrose ended the Pirates' five-game winning streak with a 12-9 victory under the lights in Paynesville Sunday night.

Melrose scored four times in the top of the first and six times in the third to build a 10-1 lead.

The Pirates rallied with four runs in the fourth and seventh, but Melrose held on to win. Darren Michaelis hit a three-run homer in the seventh for the Pirates, and Josh Williams added a solo shot.

The Pirates outhit Melrose 12-11, but the Pirates also committed four errors while the Black Sox played flawless defense.

The Pirates are now 3-5 in the County Line League and 7-6 overall.

The Regal Eagles jumped on New London-Spicer Sunday, scoring four runs in the first and seven in the second. The Eagles won on the road at NL-S 13-7.

Ron Fuchs had four hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI for Regal. Brad Lieser had three hits, a two-run homer, and four RBI. Regal outhit NL-S 15-7.

After NL-S got back in the game with six runs in the third, Nathan Winter pitched four innings of shutout relief and picked up the victory.

Regal also hosted Melrose on Saturday, in a make-up league game. Regal took an early 4-2 lead, but the Black Sox scored six unanswered runs and won 8-5.

Eric Meyer threw eight innings, allowing only one earned run, to earn the victory for Melrose.

Ron Fuchs pitched two perfect innings of relief for Regal, with four strikeouts.

The Paynesville American Legion baseball team evened their record with a 11-10 win over St. Joseph on Monday, June 12.

St. Joseph led 9-1, but Paynesville rallied to win with 10 runs over the last four innings. Paynesville still trailed 10-7 going into the bottom of the seventh, but scored four runs to win the game.

Jon Lieser started for Paynesville and pitched four innings. Josh Kampsen pitched three innings in relief and allowed only one run. He earned the victory.

Paynesville plays at Melrose on Thursday.

Roscoe beat Regal 19-7 on Wednesday, June 14. Regal took a 4-0 lead, but Roscoe scored 19 runs in their last four at bats to even their record at 2-2.

Roscoe lost a heartbreaker to Freeport on Sunday, 10-9. Freeport built an early lead, and the Rangers' rally fell a run short.
