Pirates rally in ninth to top Starbuck; Lakers stay unbeaten

The Paynesville Pirates rallied, scoring six runs in the last three innings, including three runs in the bottom of the ninth, to beat Starbuck 6-5 on Wednesday, June 2, in Paynesville.

The Pirates (3-2) ended the night game by scoring the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth.

Aaron Chan shut out the Pirates for six innings on one hit, but Paynesville rallied against two Starbuck relief pitchers in the Cornbelt League game, scoring a run in the seventh, two in the eighth, and three in the ninth.

Seth Miller pitched eight innings for the Pirates, with Tyler Wuertz earning the victory by throwing a 1-2-3 top of the ninth.

The Pirates will host New London on Wednesday, June 9, at 7 p.m., and they will play at Starbuck on Sunday, June 13, at 1:30 p.m.

The Lake Henry Lakers remained undefeated in the Stearns County League, beating Elrosa 9-5 in Elrosa on Friday night.

The Lakers (6-0) scored four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. Josh Kampsen singled and Jon Lieser doubled to start the rally. Doug Fuchs and Jeff Olmscheid had RBI singles in the rally.

The Lakers scored nine runs on 15 hits, including four by Kampsen and three by Lieser.

Mike Stalboerger earned the pitching win for five innings of work, with Fuchs earning a save with four innings of relief, allowing only one unearned run.

This week, the Lakers will play at Paynesville on Friday night. They will host Roscoe in a league game on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

New Munich 6

St. Martin used a nine-run fifth inning to hand New Munich their first league loss on Sunday and remain a half game behind Lake Henry in the Stearns County League South Division.

St. Martin (6-1) trailed 4-1 before their fifth-inning rally. The big blow in the inning was a three-run homer by Sam Rothstein.

Ken Arceneau allowed four runs in the first three innings but then pitched four shutout innings to earn the victory.

St. Martin will play at St. Nicholas at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9. The Martins will play at Meire Grove on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Spring Hill rallied with six runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to beat Roscoe 12-5 on Sunday in Spring Hill.

Earlier, Roscoe (1-6 in league) had rallied, scoring two runs in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2 and three runs in the top of the sixth to take a short-lived 5-2 lead.

Spring Hill scored six times in the bottom of the sixth to retake an 8-5 lead and then added four insurance runs in the seventh inning.

This week, Roscoe will host Richmond on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and the Rangers will play at Lake Henry on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
