Bulldogs fall in eight innings to Rockford 2-1

By Michael Jacobson

So close.

The Bulldogs softball team came within one inning of upsetting Rockford in the first round of the district playoffs last week. But the Rockets tied the game 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the seventh and then won the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, winning 2-1.

Junior Val Callenius pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs, allowing only two hits and no earned runs. She struck out 10.

Rockford (17-4) used a walk, a stolen base, and a throwing error to score the tying run in the seventh inning, though Callenius stranded the winning run at third to end the inning. With two outs in the eighth inning, Rockford used another walk, two stolen bases, and another throwing error to win 2-1.

The Bulldogs only managed two hits: by junior Kim Hess in the third inning and by ninth grader Chelsey Kalkbrenner in the seventh inning.

Hess scored the Dogs' only run, walking to lead off the game, stealing second, and scoring on a Rockford error. The Dogs, seeded seventh, held that 1-0 lead for six innings before Rockford, seeded second, rallied.

Rockford advanced to the district finals before losing to Annandale. The Rockets also beat the Dogs 7-3 in April.

Paynesville ended their season with a record of 7-13. The young team had only one senior on the team this spring.
