Lakers, Martins split; Pirates, Regal top Granite

The Lake Henry Lakers split two league games over the Memorial Day weekend, defeating neighbor Spring Hill 6-3 on Sunday after losing at Elrosa 11-1 on Friday night.

The Lakers rallied from a 1-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth against Spring Hill on Sunday. They added two runs in the bottom of the seventh, building a 6-1 lead.

Ryan Wuertz pitched seven strong innings, allowing only one run, for the victory.

Spring Hill added two runs in the top of the eighth but lost 6-3.

On Friday, Elrosa built a 9-0 lead against the Lakers, capitalizing on six Laker errrors. The Lakers scored a run in the top of the sixth, but Elrosa answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and won 11-1.

The Lakers (4-2 in the Stearns County South and 4-4 overall) will play at Meire Grove on Sunday.

Pirates top Granite Falls
The Paynesville Pirates earned their first win in the Cornbelt League on Sunday, dumping state power Granite Falls 12-7 on the road.

The Pirates broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the sixth and then exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh, taking a 11-3 lead before Granite Falls rallied, making the final score 12-7.

Adam Hemmesch earned the pitching victory by throwing seven innings in relief.

On Friday night, the Pirates were beaten at home by Bird Island 7-3. Bird Island took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the fourth. The Pirates answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Bird Island responded with three more runs in the top of the fifth.

After this flurry of offense, neither team scored again.

This week, the Pirates (1-3) will host Greenwald in an exhibition game on Friday night at 8:30 p.m.

Regal tops Granite, too
The Regal Eagles scored four runs in the top of the tenth inning to rally and beat state power Granite Falls 11-7 in a Cornbelt League game in Granite on Friday.

Regal trailed 6-3 before scoring two runs in the seventh and two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. Chris Rohe singled in the ninth to tie the game at 6-6, and Shane Rademacher singled to put Regal ahead 7-6. But Granite Falls scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 7-7.

Regal scored four runs in the tenth on an RBI triple by Chris Beier followed by three walks with three runs scoring on passed balls.

Regal, however, gave 12 unanswered runs to Starbuck on Sunday, losing 16-5 in eight innings by the ten-run rule. Regal led briefly 5-4 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the third, but Starbuck scored three runs in the fourth, sixth in the fifth, and three more in the eighth to win 16-5, overcoming eight errors.

This week, Regal (5-3 overall, 2-3 in league) will host Roscoe on Friday at 6:15 p.m. in an exhibition game. They will play at New London-Spicer on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and at Bird Island on Sunday, also at 1:30 p.m.

Martins split two games
St. Martin lost a back-and-forth, high-scoring contest at Spring Hill on Saturday, scoring one run in the tenth inning to take a brief lead but seeing Spring Hill score two runs in the bottom of the tenth to win 13-12. The Chargers scored the winning run in the tenth inning on a suicide squeeze by Dave Stalboerger.

The game featured seven lead changes and two ties.

Spring Hill overcame four homers by the Martins: Jim Arceneau, Ken Arceneau, Steve Lieser, and Jesse Thelen.

The Martins kept their bats hot on Sunday, pounding 15 hits and scoring 15 runs to beat Greenwald 15-1. The Martins scored six runs in the second inning and six more in the sixth inning in St. Martin.

Scott Schlangen pitched six shutout innings to earn the victory on Sunday against Greenwald.

The Martings (6-4 overall, 4-2 in the Stearns County South) will play at Watkins on Wednesday and will play at New Munich on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The Roscoe Rangers (1-5 in the Stearns County South) lost two league games over the weekend: 14-4 at New Munich on Saturday (wth Chad Funk hitting two grand slams) and 22-3 at home against Meire Grove on Sunday (with the Grovers getting 21 hits).
