Paynesville Press - May 30, 2001

Seven-run inning costs softball team

By Jenny Habben

The Bulldogs were pumped up to play against St. Michael-Albertville in the first round of the subsection playoffs on Monday, May 21. Paynesville played a great game and led 5-0 until the fifth inning, when they made two errors and were unable to stop STMA from scoring seven runs.

The Knights eliminated the Bulldogs with a 7-5 victory.

Kim Hess led the Bulldogs with two hits and also scored two runs. She started out the first inning by hitting a single, stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch, and scoring on a ground out to give Paynesville an early lead.

In the third inning, Paynesville added to their lead by scoring three runs. Laurie Barten, Mellody Veldkamp, and Lisa Hemingson walked consecutively to load the bases. Ann Stalboerger hit a single to bring in Barten, Veldkamp scored on an error, and Hemingson scored on a ground out.

In the fourth inning, Heather Roos walked and advanced to second on Hess' single. Barten hit into a line drive double play. The first baseman caught the ball and tried to get Hess out, but the ump called Hess safe. While this was happening, Roos took off for third base, drew a throw from the first baseman and was out. Hess advanced to second and was brought home by Veldkamp's hit.

Through four innings, Hemingson - aided by good defense - had shut out the Knights.

The fifth inning, however, was fatal to the Bulldogs. Paynesville went down 1-2-3 against a new relief pitcher.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs committed an error, which allowed a STMA player to be on first and another on third. Katie Braut hit a double, which brought in two runs. Three more runs were scored to tie the game, and then coach Tim Woehler brought in Jenny Habben to pitch. But two more runs were scored before the Bulldogs could end the inning, giving the Knights a 7-5 lead.

Paynesville was unable to score in the sixth or seventh inning and ended up losing the game 7-5.

Coach Woehler said, "If you take out the fifth inning, we would have won. The girls played a good game, and it was a great season."

The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the conference, their first .500 season in years.
