Lakers, Rangers sweep games
over Memorial weekend

The Lakers continued their unbeaten start in the Stearns County League with a pair of victories over the Memorial Day weekend.

At Meire Grove on Monday, the Lakers were outhit 10-6, but used seven walks to beat the Grovers. The Lakers broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third and won 7-4.

Doug Fuchs pitched seven innings, allowing only one earned run, for the victory.

Roger Wuertz The Lakers pounded 19 hits and scored 21 runs to beat Spring Hill in Lake Henry on Sunday. Jeff Schmitz hit a bases-loaded double in the second to start the offensive onslaught, and Roger Wuertz hit a grand slam home run in the eighth to cap it.

Pitcher Roger Wuertz pitched three shutout innings of relief and hit a grand slam in the Lakers' 21-0 victory over Spring Hill on Sunday.

On the mound, Mike Stalboerger and Wuertz combined on a two-hit shutout. Stalboerger earned the win with six innings of work, and Wuertz finished up with three innings of hitless relief and struck out six of the nine batters he faced.

The Roscoe Rangers swept their league games over the Memorial Day weekend to even their league record at 2-2.

At Greenwald on Monday, the Rangers rallied with a four-run ninth inning to beat the Cubs 5-3. The Rangers had stranded nine runners over the previous four innings before Todd Leyendecker delivered a bases-loaded single to right that scored two, and a throwing error on the play allowed another run to score.

Justin Mackedanz started for the Rangers and pitched into the seventh. Greg Heinen earned the victory with two innings of scoreless relief.

The Rangers' Brent Heinen yielded a lead-off homer and a walk to start the game on Sunday against Meire Grove, but he held the Grovers to three hits the rest of the way. He struck out 12 in the victory at Roscoe.

Greg Heinen tied the score for the Rangers with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, and Lee Schleper put the Rangers in front with a three-run blast in the fourth.
