St. Martin sweeps two weekend games

Jake Thelen homers The St. Martin Martins claimed first place in the Stearns County League South Division by sweeping two weekend games, including an 8-4 victory over second place Lake Henry on Saturday.

The Lakers took a 2-0 lead, but the Martins tied the score on a two-run homer by Luke Rothstein in the second inning. Jake Thelen hit solo homeruns in the fifth and sixth innings for St. Martin.

Rothstein for St. Martin and Doug Fuchs for Lake Henry each pitched well in relief, yielding only a solo homer.

St. Martin is now 5-1 in league, while Lake Henry is 4-2.

St. Martin 2, Elrosa 1
The Martins completed their Memorial Day sweep by beating Elrosa 2-1 in a pitcher's duel on Sunday in St. Martin.

Ken Arceneau pitched a complete game shutout for St. Martin, allowing only four hits while striking out 11.

Aaron Vogt struck out 13 for Elrosa but yielded nine hits, including four in the sixth inning, when the Martins scored two runs. St. Martin trailed 1-0 when Nate Schlangen led off the sixth with a hit. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a hit by Jesse Thelen. Carl Lieser singled, and then Craig Hennen, who was 404, drove in the winning run with a single.

This week, St. Martin plays New Munich in an exhibition game at the Metrodome on Friday night after the Twins. They also will play at Spring Hill on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Lakers 14, Greenwald 2
Jon Lieser getting hit The Lakers jumped all over Greenwald, building a 14-0 lead after six innings, on the day Lake Henry retired Lynn Hemmesch's jersey. The Lakers beat Greenwald 14-2 on Sunday, managing a split over the Memorial Day weekend.

Lake Henry's Jon Lieser gets plunked with a pitch in the fourth inning, as the Lakers scored one run.

Adam Miller hit a two-run single in the first inning, Doug Fuchs hit a two-run homer in the third, and Ryan Wuertz had a two-run double in the fifth inning for the Lakers.

Wuertz also pitched five shutout innings to earn the victory.

This week, the Lakers will host Kimball on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and will play at Meire Grove on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Pirates top Regal, 2-1
Out at second Brad Deyak hit a two-run double in the third inning, and Chris Stanley pitched six innings in relief to earn the victory as the Paynesville Pirates beat the Regal Eagles 2-1 in a Cornbelt League game on Saturday in Regal.

On Sunday, the Pirates lost 10-0 to Willmar in Paynesville, dropping their league record to 2-2.

The Pirates will host Raymond on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Roscoe gets first win
The Roscoe Rangers beat the Richmond Royals 1-0 in ten innings on Saturday for their first win of the season.

With one out, Chris VanderBeek doubled, advanced to third on a single by Rick Mackedanz, and scored the game's only run when Mike Heinen beat out a possible inning-ending double play.

Brent Heinen pitched ten shutout innings for Roscoe, allowing only five hits. Steve Schreifels pitched all ten innings for Richmond.

On Sunday, New Munich beat Roscoe 3-0 as the Rangers managed only two hits. New Munich scored all its runs in the sixth inning on homeruns by Chad Funk and Paul Sand.

This week, Roscoe (now 1-4 in league) will play at Starbuck on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and will play at Greenwald on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
