Errors proved costly again for the Paynesville Bulldogs as they lost to the Annandale Cardinals 10-2 in the District 20 playoffs on Monday, May 17.

The Bulldogs committed four errors that proved costly in two high-scoring innings for the Cardinals. In the fourth, for example, the Bulldogs' two errors gave new life to a Cardinal attack. They had three hits in the inning as well, but because of the errors all four runs were unearned.

Wild pitches and passed balls allowed two more runs to score in the fifth. Two errors, a walk, and a hit allowed the last two Cardinal runs to score in the sixth.

Coach Murry Rafferty said pitcher Jessie Louis did a good job. She gave up just seven hits and walked two in pitching all six innings for Paynesville.

At the plate, the Bulldogs had six hits, a good showing compared with their recent struggles at the plate. "That was good," said Rafferty. "That was a positive part."

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Tiff Haag reached base when her hard hit ball went past the Cardinals' fielder, a play that was ruled an error. Then Carrie Hemmesch singled, and Kelsey MoserÐwho led the Bulldogs in hitting for the season with a .312 averageÐbrought Haag home with a double. The Bulldogs had runners on second and third with one out, but couldn't plate another run as the inning ended with a strike out and a fly out.

The Bulldogs' sixth started with singles from Moser, Kelly Loesch, and Tricia Hemmesch to load the bases. Moser scored on an error. With the bases loaded still, two straight ground balls to the pitcher were thrown home for force outs and an out on the bases ended the inning.

Bulldogs with hits were Haag, Carrie Hemmesch, Moser, Loesch, and Tricia Hemmesch.
