Girls set meet scoring record in sub-section track

Relay The Paynesville girls' track team dominated their Section 5A Sub-Section track meet on Thursday, May 20, in New London. The girls won by a margin of 27 points. The girls also set a new sub-section record for most points scored in a meet. They beat the record by 21 points. They all did a wonderful job.

The 3,200-meter relay, left, really set the tone for the rest of the meet. They ran their best time of the season, with a time of 10:25.17, and got first place, which advances them to the section meet. The members of this relay team are Carin Frenchick, Amanda Mayer, Leanne Kolb, and Danielle Lieser. (The top two relay teams advance and the top four in the running events and field events go on as well.)

All three 110-meter hurdlers ran their best times. Amber Michaelis ran a 17.1, Melissa Bachman ran a 17.94, and Katrina Orbeck ran a 18.3.

Both of the teams sprinters, Tiff Rausch and Courtney Karsch, are advancing on to sections in the 100-meter dash. Rausch is also advancing to the sections in the 200- and the 400-meter dashes. Rausch also ran her fastest time of the season in the 400, a 59.83. So, Rausch won all three of her events and is the best sprinter in the sub-section.

The new 800-meter relay team received a fourth place at this meet and they also took five seconds off their time from conference. They were a team that was put together just a couple of weeks ago and are doing well. The members of that relay are: Pyper Garmon, Mayer, Gina Benson, and Carla Hemmesch. Garmon also advances to the sections in her 400-meter race.

HessJenny Hess, pictured right, is still undefeated in all her individual races. She is just a wonderful athlete. In the mile she ran a 5:19.5 and in the two-mile she ran a 11:45.

The 400-meter relay got second place with a time of 55.16, which is a personal best for the season. The members are Karsch, Heidi Jansen, Joy Hemmesch, and Carla Hemmesch.

Michaelis also got a first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.3, which ties her personal best time. Cindy Lang was not too far behind in fifth place with a time of 54.1. Her time has gone down as well, and she has improved a lot. Michaelis also got a first place in the long jump with a leap of 15'1.5".

The last event of the day is always the 1,600-meter relay, and it is also a very exciting one. The members of the Paynesville team are: Frenchick, Garmon, Amy Mueller, and Hess. They all ran great sprints. In the last leg, Hess had a tough lap against a good athlete from ACGC. Hess held off by .06. The relay team ran a 4:18.37 in getting first place.

In the shot put, Jansen and Joy Hemmesch threw their personal bests. Jansen threw 32'6" and Hemmesch threw a 32'3".

Bachman won the pole vault as a ninth grader with a jump of 8'6". Close behind was Joy Hemmesch with a jump of 7'6". Bachman also advances to the section in triple jump with a jump of 30'10.5".

Benson advances in the high jump for the fifth time in her career. She jumped a 5'1". Ashley Wall was a new addition to the high jump team and did very well. She jumped 4'9" and got seventh.

The Paynesville girls are the first team to win four consecutive sub-section championships. Previously, New London-Spicer and Paynesville had won three.

"The team really was on a mission to get this record and they came through with their best team performance of the season. We have won eight champion-ships this season, but this was our most dominating performance," said Coach Randgaard.

The girls' times dropped in almost every event. The field events throws and jumps were also some of the best we've had all season.

"This group of girls are really the best team in the conference and sub-section for the 1999 season and are ranked number one in the area," said coach Randgaard.
