Dogs pitch no-hitter to beat EV-W

Juniors Val Callenius and Leah Spanier combined to pitch a no-hitter as the Bulldogs softball team defeated Eden Valley-Watkins 6-3 on Thursday in Paynesville.

Val Callenius pitched five innings, allowing no hits but walking six, and Spanier pitched two hitless innings in relief. Callenius allowed two unearned runs in the fourth inning on two walks and two errors, and Spanier allowed one unearned run in the sixth.

Junior Val Callenius - throwing out a runner against Sauk - pitched five hitless innnings against EV-W on Thursday, combinging with junior Leah Spanier to throw a no-hitter for Paynesville.

The Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Callenius had the only hit in the inning for the Dogs, a run-scoring single to center. Junior Kim Hess, junior Kayla Mackedanz, and sophomore Amanda Skalicky all walked and came around to score in the inning for the Dogs, too, along with Callenius.

Skalicky hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth for the Dogs' fifth run, and Hess tripled and scored in the sixth inning for the Dogs' final run.

The Dogs, seeded seventh, played second-seeded Rockford in the district quarterfinals on Tuesday. If they win, they will play in the semifinals at Loretto on Wednesday. If they win again, they will play in the finals on Thursday at Loretto.

Paynesville 6, Sauk Centre 2
The Bulldogs ended a seven-game losing streak by beating Sauk Centre 6-2 on Tuesday, May 18.

The Bulldogs built a 5-0 lead against the Mainstreeters and earned their third conference win. The Dogs (3-7 in the WCC North) finished tied for fourth in the conference with Albany. Sauk went winless in the WCC North.

The Dogs scored three runs in the first inning, getting a leadoff double from Hess, an RBI double from junior Ashley Spanier, and a RBI single from ninth grader Chelsey Kalkbrenner. They added two more runs in the second, as Mackedanz hit an RBI double and Callenius hit an RBI single.

The Dogs scored their final run in the fifth inning, as junior Ashley Karger, junior Amber Chevalier, and Hess singled.

Chevalier pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing only two unearned runs in the top of the seventh.

LPGE 6, Paynesville 5
The Dogs nearly pulled an upset, almost played spoiler in the conference race, but LPGE rallied to beat them 6-5 on Monday, May 17.

The Thunder scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back two-out singles to defeat the Dogs and win the WCC North title with a 9-1 record, finishing a game ahead of Cathedral at 8-2.

The Dogs had taken a 5-4 lead with a run in the sixth inning. With the score tied at 4-4, Callenius singled to lead off the sixth, and she scored when Skalicky followed with an RBI double.

Both teams scored a run in the first and three in the third to create the 4-4 tie. Callenius, in addition to pitching six innings, hit a two-run triple in the third inning. Skalicky drove her home with a single.

Both Callenius and Skalicky had two hits apiece for the Dogs. Callenius drove in three runs, and Skalicky drove in two.
