Dogs drop WCC finale to Sauk, 6-5

By Michael Jacobson

Sauk Centre scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Bulldogs softball team 6-5 in their regular-season finale.

The Dogs led 5-2 entering the sixth inning, but Sauk Centre scored two runs on a hit batter, a triple, and a single to get within one run at 5-4.

Then the Streeters scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win. The Dogs were within an out of winning the game, retiring the first two Sauk Centre batters to start the seventh inning. But the Dogs made two errors with two outs to allow Sauk Centre to score the tying and winning run.

Sauk Centre had taken a 2-0 lead when a two-out error allowed them to score two runs in the bottom of the first.

The Dogs rallied to take the lead with three runs in the third inning. Senior Kayla Mackedanz hit a two-run triple for the Dogs to give them a 3-2 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Dogs scored two more runs to expand their lead to 5-2.

Both teams scored more runs than they had hits. Sauk scored six runs on five hits, thanks to three Bulldog errors, and Paynesville scored five runs on three hits, thanks to two Sauk errors and nine bases on balls.

The Bulldogs ended their regular season with a record of 10-7, including 5-5 in the West Central Conference North. They finished third in the conference standings.

This week, the Dogs - who were seeded fourth in Subsection 20AA - hosted fifth-seeded Rockford on Monday, May 23. If the Dogs win, they played either top-seeded Annandale or eighth-seeded Kimball on Tuesday, May 24.

The subsection final will be held on Thursday, May 26, at 4:30 p.m. in Loretto.
